Abrines explodes for a FC Barcelona Regal win

In a thrilling game to the final buzzer FC Barcelona Regal defeated Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv on Thursday night, 74-71, in Group F. Barcelona was already group champ before the game. Maccabi qualifies for the playoffs third, as its loss combines with the Olympiacos win put the Reds up for second place. Maccabi had its chances until the start of the last quarter but then, a young star that waited patiently all season, finally exploded. Alejandro Abrines had a career-best performance as he soared for 21 points, 12 in the final period, and 3 rebounds to lead Barca to the final win. Ante Tomic added 13 points and Juan Carlos Navarro, who could not finish the game due to a slight foot injury, had 12. For Maccabi, Ricky Hickman and Devin Smith had 16 points apiece, David Logan added 11 and Shawn James hit 10.

Maccabi starts strong, Barca recovers

Maccabi Electra took the initiative in the scoreboard during the first minutes with Shawn James as protagonist, as he soon scored his sixth point for 5-12. However, the hosts regrouped soon as Erazem Lorbek, Juan Carlos Navarro and Marcelinho Huertas hit eight unanswered points to put Barcelona ahead, 13-12. The following minutes featured an exchange of baskets including a three-point play by Nik Caner-Medley that made it 19-19 after 10 minutes.

Hosts start pulling away

Abrines and Logan opened the second quarter trading threes, and then Abrines hit a new bucket as the score progressed with no breaks. Logan again and then Jawai hit for both sides, but Barcelona was keeping lead when Victor Sada fed Abrines for a monster alley-oop that made it 30-24. Sada then hit a bucket by himself to enlarge the difference even more, but then bwin March MVP Devin Smith took matters into his own hands penetrating in traffic for a nifty bucket and then Ricky Hickman decided that was the best option also and copied him to make it 32-28. The hosts were showing impressive numbers in 2-point shooting with 7 of 7 in the quarter when Navarro hit a layup for 36-32, while Maccabi was stuck at 1 of 8 from the arc. The score would not move in the last minute of the half as the teams hit the lockerrooms for the break.

Maccabi revives through Hickman

Things looked bright for Maccabi at the start of the second half. After Navarro's three, Yogev Ohayon replied in the same manner and then Hickman hit six point in a row by himself, including four in an unsportsmanlike foul situation by Huertas, to give his team the lead again, 39-41. Ante Tomic revived the hosts by finishing an alley-oop from Huertas, but then was called a technical foul that allowed Hickman to score his seventh point in the quarter to keep Maccabi aehad, 44-48 after Smith's three. Like a speed demon, James stole the ball fast and fed Logan for a layup that made it a 0-6 run for the guests. In the following plays, Barcelona tried to catch up but Maccabi succeeded in keeping the 6-point lead, until free throws by Abrines made it 51-54. However, Guy Pnini had free throws in the last possession to leave it at 51-56 after 30 minutes.

A new star is born: Abrines

Jawai had a putback for Barca to start the last period, but Hickman was back to the line to get Maccabi going again. A great defensive effort of Maccabi was shattered by Abrines and his huge three on the shot-clock that set the stands on fire to make it 56-57. Abrines was on fire and hit two more free throws to put the hosts ahead, 58-57. Abrines still blasted a new three but Logan and Smith teamed up for five straight Maccabi points that gave them a new lead, 61-62. In the meantime, Abrines was everywhere and added two more free throws to his column, making it 10 points for him in the quarter. Smith was also dominating in offense for Maccabi as the game's excitement escalated. With less than 3 minutes left, Joe Ingles and Nik Caner-Medley traded threes, and with a 70-67, the game entered the last 2 minutes. With Ingles playing point, he organized the play and fed Tomic for an easy layup making it 72-67 forcing Maccabi's timeout. Barcelona let the clock run, but Hickman still had time for a trip to the line. He hit the two attempts making it 72-71 with 8 seconds to go. It was then Sarunas Jasikevicius turn on the line to hit both attempts for 73-71 and 6 seconds to go. In the last play, Smith turned the ball over and gave the win to the hosts.

"First of all, I want to congratulate the club for tonight's initiative. It has been great to celebrate the Euroleague title we won 10 years ago, in 2003. For Barcelona fans like I am and basketball lovers, it has been great to remember that. We have taken the game as a general test for the quarterfinals, feel it that way, and play as serious as the competition deserves. It was not easy to play the last two games against Montepaschi and Maccabi, two teams that needed a win, and still managed to win both of them when we didn't play for big goals. The team shows how mature it is and that it never speculates. It has been like a typical playoffs game for us, really close. We started it without big leads but under control, with the feeling it could be ours. Maccabi rallied but we showed character and aggressivity to win it. Panathinaikos is our next opponent and we must play with intensity and prepare well in order to beat them. It cannot be any other way. It is a high-level team with athletic players on the wings, where we will not have Pete Mickeal or Xavi Rabaseda. They are a very physical team and we have to be able to compete against them, find that aggressivity we lacked at some point during tonight's game."
BLATT, DAVID

"People saw a really good basketball game tonight. I congratulate Barca for their hard-fought win. Obviously we were fighting hard because we had a lot to play for tonight. Barcelona is a great professional team and they play to win. They didn’t give us any breaks. It was a great move by the Barcelona management to make tonight the 10th anniversary of the first Euroleague title. [It was a] great psychological move because the players on the team see these great players and that great moment and that great part of history and they very obliged to play a high-level game. I think it’s wonderful that they do that… and we were happy to be a part of it. When I saw Bodiroga and Dueñas and Nacho and all these guys that I coached against, I was excited; I wanted to play. And of course Saras and Navarro. The only problem was that Navarro and Jasikevicius put on a uniform and they beat us. That was the problem. You’re talking about two of the greatest players in the history of European basketball. Saras obviously I coached and Juan Carlos I coached against for years and I admire them both.

"The game came down to one simple thing. Barcelona made shots in the fourth quarter; we missed shots. They were not easy of course, but they were the same type of shots that Barcelona made. I’m very happy that we qualified [for the playoffs]. Everybody buried us and we came back and won six straight games and qualified justifiably. I am very proud of my players and our organization for the way that we displayed winning spirit and represented the great tradition of our club. It is always great to play here. This is a great country for basketball. I wish Barcelona well. I home we meet them again.

"The new system of the Euroleague, with the 14 games in the Top 16 is the best thing to happen to the Euroleague, in my opinion. The best thing. Because there are so many more quality games. And at the end of the 14 games, you know who are the best eight teams. In six games, so many things can happen. But 14 games? And this year we get to play Barca, we get to play Olympiacos, we get to play Siena, we get to play Caja Laboral. Suddenly you get to play all the great teams. And the fans get to see those games. That’s fantastic. Good for the Euroleague!"

"Well, so we'll face Panathinaikos in the playoffs. W have to get ready for the series, because it starts next week and it will be tough. They have a great talent and leader in Dimitris Diamantidis and that's already a lot. It's true that they practically changed the rest of the team, but they have been playing better and better and they defeated great European teams like Real Madrid - twice - or Anadolu Efes. If we do our job and focus, we will succeed. We have to start well, especially playing at home."
PNINI, GUY
Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv
"We really wanted to win today and we were not far from it, but I think all basketball fans know that we deserve to be in the playoffs. We played a great round of games; we never quit for a second. I am proud of my teammates and everyone at the club. Real Madrid is a great club, but we are in great shape and you could see that today. Of course it will be tough without the home-court advantage, but we have won a few big games on the road and anything can happen. We will continue working hard and playing together with all our hearts."
