Micic, Efes dominate the Turkish Derby
Anadolu Efes Istanbul earned plenty of bragging rights in the Istanbul Derby by downing host Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul 74-106 at Ulker Sports and Event Hall on Friday. Efes dominated from start to finish behind an outstanding Vasilije Micic to improve to 15-10 in the standings, good for a leap ahead of Fenerbahce into sixth place. Efes now has a four-game winning streak and ended the 10-game streak of Fenerbahce, whose record dropped to 15-11. Micic paced the winners with 35 points. Rodrigue Beaubois added 14, Sertac Sanli 13 and Shane Larkin 11 for Efes. Nando De Colo led Fenerbahce with 24 points while Jan Vesely added 18. Efes led 39-53 at halftime, extended its margin to 58-81 and did not find any resistance to taking the win back across the Bosphorus Strait.
Sanli led an 0-8 opening run by Efes with a dunk and a couple of jumpers. Marko Guduric stepped up for Fenerbahce but Sanli scored again and Micic buried a six-meter shot for a double-digit lead, 2-12. De Colo stepped up with a jumper, a triple and a backdoor layup. Beaubois hit a jumper, Bryant Dunston added a three-point play, and Micic followed a three-pointer with consecutive driving layups to boost Efes's lead to 9-24. Dyshawn Pierre scored down low to bring Fenerbahce within 11-24 after 10 minutes. Guduric and Krunoslav Simon traded layups early in the second quarter and Larkin struck from beyond the arc to break the game open, 13-29. Micic took over with a wild three-point play but Pierre and Lorenzo Brown kept the hosts within 18-32. Dunston found his second layup-plus-free throw combination, then Beaubois and James Anderson each struck from downtown for a 22-42 Efes lead. Jarell Eddie joined the three-point shootout and Vesely scored his team's next 10 points, including back-to-back dunks to get Fenerbahce within 35-46. Simon and Micic stepped up for Efes but De Colo kept the hosts within 39-53 at halftime. Beaubois and Larkin each hit a triple right after the break and Micic struck twice from downtown but De Colo singlehandedly kept Fenerbahce within 49-65. Sanli and Edgaras Ulanovas exchanged three-pointers and Micic restored a 52-70 Efes lead. Sanli sank a long two-pointer and Micic added back-to-back triples – one of them from way downtown – to help the guests take a commanding 58-81 margin after 30 minutes. Beaubois buried a three-pointer early in the fourth quarter and added a jumper for a 60-86 score. Simon hit a floater and Chris Singleton connected from downtown to make it a 31-point game, 62-93. Nothing changed in the final 7 minutes, as Efes cruised to a no-doubt-about-it, well-deserved road victory.
Pivotal performer
Micic dominated the game with the best game of his already-solid EuroLeague career. He finished a personal-best 37 points on 4-of-6 two-point shots, 6-of-6 three-pointers and 11-of-11 free throws, adding 5 assists, 3 steals and 8 fouls drawn for a PIR of 44 – his new career high.
Game-changing moment
Efes led from start to finish and got a double-digit advantage right away. Sertac Sanli provided instant offense in the opening minutes with a dunk, a layup and a couple of jumpers. Adrien Moerman had a fastbreak dunk and Vasilije Micic hit a jumper to give Efes a 2-12 lead, and the guests never looked back.
Stellar stat
Efes hit 22-of-30 two-point shots (73.3%) and 14-of-25 three-pointers (56%) for the team's second-best field goal percentage (36-of-55, 65.5%) in its EuroLeague history. Its best, 66.0% (35-of-53), came against FC Bayern Munich on October 11, 2018. Its 106 points tonight ties Efes's third-best mark in EuroLeague history, too. Its highest scoring night, 100, came against Olympiacos Piraeus on December 9, 2004.
