Bayern beats Olimpija, advances to next round

FC Bayern Munich sealed its ticket to the Eurocup eighthfinals by edging Union Olimpija Ljubljana on Group K on Wednesday. Bayern improved to 4-0 and mathematically made it to the next round while Olimpija dropped to 1-3. Bryce Taylor led the winners with 18 points. John Bryant added 17, Vladimir Stimac had 14 while Heiko Schaffartzik and Nihad Djedovic each got 11 for Bayern. Dino Muric led Olimpija with 19 points. Halil Kanacevic added 17 while Sasu Salin had 12 for the guests. Bayern got a 26-20 lead after 10 minutes and extended it to 51-43 at halftime. Olimpija rallied in the fourth quarter and tied it at 66-66 on a three-pointer by Salin. Even when Bayern led all the way since that moment, Kanacevic brought Olimpija within 82-81 with 2 minutes left. Styimac stepped up with 4 unanswered points while free throws by Schaffartzik and Anton Gavel sealed the outcome down the stretch.

Three-pointers by Klemen Prepelic and Muric gave Olimpija an early 4-6 lead. A 7-0 run which Djedovic capped with a put-back basket made Bayern get an 11-6 edge right after that. Muric stepped up with consecutive baskets and soon scored again for a 13-12 Olimpija deficit. Bryant struck from downtown and Jan Jagla copied him soon after that for a 21-15 Bayern lead. Kanacevic and Muric kept Olimpija within 26-20 after 10 minutes. Schaffartzik and Djedovic took over to make it a 13-point game, 33-20, early in the second quarter. Muric, Salin and Hristo Nikolov stepped up for Olimpija to keep the guests within 36-29. Bryant and Alen Omic traded baskets and a jumper by Bryant gave Bayern a 40-31 margin. Stimac and Dusko Savanovic restored a 46-34 Bayern margin but Olimpija found new go-to guys in Omic and Luka Rupnik for a 49-43 deficit. Free throws by Taylor fixed the halftime score at 51-43. Nikolov and Paolo Marinelli gave Olimpija hope, 54-49, soon after the break. Djedovic and Bryant made free throws and soon allowed Bayern to get a double-digit lead, 62-52. Bryant kept pacing the hosts but Kanacevic singlehandedly kept Olimpija within 66-58 after 30 minutes. Salin struck twice from downtrown in an 0-8 run which tied the game, 66-66, early in the fourth quarter. Taylor had 5 points in a 7-0 Bayern run for a 73-66 score but Kanacevic and Marinelli soon brought Olimpija within 73-72. A layup by Bryant gave Bayern a 80-74 edge with 3 minutes left but Muric and Kanacevic made it a one-point game, 82-81. Stimac split free throws and hit a three-pointer which sealed the outcome, 86-81. Free throws by Schaffartzik and Gavel sealed the outcome in the final 12 seconds.
