Milan gets big road win in Athens

AX Armani Exchange Milan grabbed its first road win in the 2019-20 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague by downing Panathinaikos OPAP Athens 78-79 in the Greek capital on Thursday. Milan improved to 2-1 in the standings while Panathinaikos dropped to 1-2. Vladimir Micov led the winners with 18 points. Luis Scola added 17, Michael Roll had 16 while Sergio Rodriguez added 10 for Milan. Nick Calathes led Panathinaikos with 23 points while Jacob Wiley added 17. Three-pointers by Micov, Scola, Rodriguez and Roll allowed Milan to get a 20-24 lead after 10 minutes. Wiley and Dinos Mitoglou rescued Panathinaikos and a three-pointer by Calathes tied the game, 38-38, at halftime. Scola and Micov took over after the break and Roll struck again from downtown to give Milan a 57-61 margin at the end of the third quarter. Calathes and Wiley gave Panathinaikos a 68-61 edge but a rain of three-pointers and an outstanding Micov made Milan regain the lead, 76-77. Calathes scored in the lane but free throws by Riccardo Moraschini allowed Milan to win the game.

Scola got Milan going with a layup but Calathes and Jimmer Fredette fueled a 6-0 run that Georgios Papagiannis capped with an alley-oop dunk, good for a 6-2 Panathinaikos lead. Scola and Micov each struck from downtown to make Milan regain the lead, 6-10, after a 0-8 run. Calathes and Papagiannis tried to change things for the Greens but Scola kept Milan ahead, 10-15. A couple of put-back layups by Wiley ignited an 8-0 run in which DeShaun Thomas and Ioannis Papapetrou dunked for a 18-15 score. Scola scored again and three-pointers by Rodriguez and Roll made Milan regain the lead, 20-24, after 10 minutes. Wiley scored down low early in the second quarter and Calathes added a floater for a 24-24 tie. Roll downed back-to-back jumpers and Rodriguez added another one for a 28-30 Milan lead. Panathinaikos found a go-to guy in Mitoglou but three-pointers by Roll and Amedeo Della Valle kept the guests ahead, 35-36. Calathes bettered Scola's layup with a triple for a 38-38 tie at halftime. Scola scored again soon after the break, Micov added a three-pointer and a jumper by Aaron White gave Milan a 42-45 lead. Scola and Micov kept pacing Milan but Papapetrou dunked and Wiley added a couple of put-back layups to make the guests call timeout at 50-49. Rodriguez and Jeff Brooks each sank a triple but Fredette kept Panathinaikos within 55-56. A layup by Kaleb Tarczewski and a bomb from beyond the arc by Roll boosted the guests' lead to 57-61 after 30 minutes. Calathes and Wiley combined for 9 points in an 11-0 run that ignited the crowd at 68-61. Micov, Brooks and Roll rescued Milan from the three-point line, 68-70, but Calathes laso struck twice from downtown and added a driving layup for a 76-72 score. Micov followed a three-point play with a jumper to make Milan regain the lead, 76-77, in the next-to-last minute. Calathes - who else? - hit a close jumper but Moraschini drew a foul with 8.8 seconds to go. He hit both attempts and Calathes missed a floater at the buzzer.

Pivotal performer

Micov hit some big shots down the stretch and ended up leading Milan with 18 points. He hit 4-of-7 two-point shots, 3-of-6 three-point shots, adding 4 rebounds, an assist, a steal and 4 fouls drawn for a PIR of 18.

Game-changing moment

Moraschini was in a pretty unique situation at the end of the game, going to the free throw line for the first time in his EuroLeague career with his team down by one points and 8.8 seconds remaining. He hit both attempts to give Milan the win, as Calathes missed at the other end.

Stellar stat

Three-pointers definitely made the difference in the game. Milan hit 14-of-26 shots from downtown (53.9%) and Panathinaikos only downed 3-of-20 from beyond the arc (15%).

Did you notice?

Scola was back to OAKA for the first time in a EuroLeague game since the 2007 Final Four. After 144 career games with Baskonia, he left the competition after the 2007 Third Place Game. He returned to OAKA almost 12 years later to offer a solid performance.

Next game:

Both teams return to Turkish Airlines EuroLeague action next week. Panathinaikos visits Zenit St Petersburg on Thursday, October 24 at 19:00 CET. A day later, on Friday, October 25, Milan welcomes Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul at 20:45 CET.

"Losing for the second time in a row is bad for us. We lost in the same way and by the same score, actually. In the first 5 minutes, Milan found ways to score against us; it took us 5 minutes to get into the rhythm of the game. Wiley and Johnson helped us very much on defense and to balance the game out. We lost in the last play of the game, but I believe that the key factor was the bad shooting percentage that we had. We shot 3 of 20 for three and Milan made big shots at the end of the game. Despite all that, the game went down to some details and players who came off the bench helped us change the picture of the game."
MESSINA, ETTORE
AX Armani Exchange Milan

"It was, of course, a very difficult game on both parts. I want to congratulate my team, of course, for the, let's say, poise that they had through the whole game, and especially in the fourth quarter when Panathinaikos had a great push and started 11-0. Of course, it is a nice win on the road, but it is a very long way for both teams. We need to work on everything; it is the beginning of the season and everybody is up and down. You just need to see the scores, not only in the EuroLeague, but also in the different national leagues - in Russia, in Spain, in Turkey... Teams are up and down. It is the beginning of the season and there are a lot of new teams. We need to work on everything. We cannot work with the help of Nedovic, Gudaitis and Mack, and we hope they are back soon, but I am proud because, in the second half, we had only 1 turnover. And in a game in which we struggled on the boards, because I think they had 22 points on second chances, to at least counter that with taking care of the ball and shooting well was great."

"Of course, we made some shots and didn't turn it over, and finally, in the fourth quarter, at one point, we started to get some defensive rebounds. That was the game. They were staying in the game because of their offensive rebounding, but my players had great character and made big plays, big shots. It is a good win, but as you know, there are 30-plus more games. There is a long way to go."

"It was a tough game. At the end of the day, it came down to execution. So I guess it didn't go our way. We had a good shot, it just didn't fall."
SCOLA, LUIS
AX Armani Exchange Milan
"Honestly, I think that nothing changed [in the second half]. We played a good game, made a couple of runs, they made a couple of runs and that is the way basketball is being played. It is a game of runs. They made a run right away in the end and it looked good for them, but we made a run right after. We tied the game, it was a close game and we made more plays. At the end of the game, it is about who makes more plays to close the game, and we did. It was a huge win for us."
MICOV, VLADIMIR
AX Armani Exchange Milan
"First of all, it is a very important win for us, especially because everybody knows how tough and how difficult it is to play here in OAKA. I think that we started the game very well, focusing on the team plan. We changed the lineup and honestly, it worked. About the second half, I scored some incredible shots in the clutch moments but anyway, basketball is a team sport, so today is me, maybe some other day is somebody else, but as I said, it is a very important win for us, especially because it is on the road."
