Dyson steps up late to lift Jerusalem over Valencia

Hapoel Bank Yahav Jerusalem opened its 7DAYS EuroCup season with a 77-81 road win at Valencia Basket at Fuente De San Luis on Wednesday. The loss dropped Valencia to 1-1. Curtis Jerrells starred with 18 points for the winners, Jerome Dyson added 17 – including the last 3 points to wrap up the win – and also collected 7 rebounds. Amare Stoudemire posted 10 points and 10 rebounds and Bar Timor scored 9 and dished 6 assists. For Valencia, Rafa Martinez led the way with 22 points, Bojan Dubljevic added 15 and Fernando San Emeterio 10. Jerusalem prevailed thanks to its advantages in rebounding (41 to 29) and assists (16 to 9) and was aided by Valencia’s poor three-point shooting (6 of 26, 23.1%). Jerusalem visits Union Olimpija Ljubljana in its next EuroCup. Valencia has a Round 3 bye.

With Bar Timor effectively dishing assists, Jerusalem raced to a 4-13 start. Fernando San Emeterio led the hosts back to within 2, though Lior Eliyahu’s bucket on the buzzer made it 16-20 after 10 minutes. Valencia closed the gap to 26-27, however Timor netted 5 in a 0-7 run and the visitors took a 36-41 edge into halftime. Jerusalem came out strong for the second half, took a double-digit lead after an Amare Stoudemire three-pointer and led by 12 before Valencia roared back with a 14-2 charge in which Rafa Martinez shined with 10 points. Guillem Vives tied it at 56-56 with a pair of free throws, however Shawn James’s first basket put the visitors back in front and the score stood at 58-61 entering the fourth quarter. Martinez’s third triple gave Valencia its first lead since the opening minutes, 66-64. In total, there would be 8 lead changes in the fourth quarter. After Valencia missed twice in the final minute with a chance to take the lead, Dyson’s layup with 17.3 second left made it 77-80. Valencia then missed twice more with a shot to tie it and Dyson iced the win from the line with 5.7 seconds remaining.

"It was a close game, decided in the final minute, but we have to look at the complete, 40-minute picture, not just to the final one. We improved our aggressiveness on defense throughout the game and I believe we played better in the second half, more active and intense. We had a chance to win, but it is also true that they played better than us in the most decisive moments of the game. I wish we had played with that intensity from the beginning of the game, but it was not possible, and that forced us to bounce back and recover from negative runs, which we did. If we had won by 1 point, which could have happened, we would be very happy, thinking that we managed to beat a very good opponent which played very well. What we have to do is follow our own way, think about our next game, learn from the mistakes we made and move forward."
PIANIGIANI, SIMONE
Hapoel Bank Yahav Jerusalem
“It was a great game for us because we fought for 40 minutes against one of the best teams in the competition and the win has a lot of important. I am pleased that the players stayed together even in the tough moments and they found the energy for the important attacks. We’re only in October, but still this is an important victory in our group and as a new team it’s important to show that we are working in the right way. "

SATO, ROMAIN

"We didn’t play a good first half ,but we came up and tried to fight. We did it and played better in the second half, but sometimes it happens that you can’t finally win it. We stayed in the game until the last minute, but we didn’t finish strong. We didn’t make shots tonight, it´s a part of the game, we had to work hard in the second half just to come back to the game and in the last minute it can go either way."
DYSON, JEROME
Hapoel Bank Yahav Jerusalem
“This was a great team win. We started the game the right way and not like in some of our recent games. We put the pressure on them. In the second half they made a comeback, but we stayed strong. Everyone did their job.”
