Valencia cruises to win in Romania after record-setting start

Valencia Basket left Romania happy with an 84-100 victory over CSU Asesoft Ploiesti in Group N. Valencia took sole possession of second place in the group with a 2-2 record behind undefeated Lokomotiv Kuban Krasnodar. Asesoft dropped to 1-3. In a run-and-gun first quarter, the visitors got a 27-42 advantage then never looked back. The point tally by Valencia was the most ever in the first quarter of a Eurocup game and 2 fewer than the competition record for any quarter. Romain Sato and Pau Ribas led the winners by scoring 19 points apiece. Bojan Dubljevic and Rafa Martinez bagged 16 each, while Luke Harangody netted 13. Nemanja Nedovic delivered 8 assists in victory. Marius Runkauskas of Ploiesti led all the scorers with 25 points on 6-for-7 shooting from downtown. Jarvis Hayes added 18 points and Gerald Lee 17.

Sato’s jumper made it 5-16 after three minutes played. Dubljevic from downtown gave the visitors a 10-24 advantage. Runkauskas cut the difference to 21-26, but Ribas’s 5 points and a layup by Guillem Vives gave Valencia a 27-42 cushion before Runkauskas fixed the score at 30-42 after 10 minutes. Jonte Flowers drew the hosts within 37-45 by scoring a long three. The difference remained close to double figures. Late in the quarter, Rafa Martinez hit from downtown and a mid-range jumper by Dubljevic reestablished a 47-61 cushion before Hayes fixed the score at 49-61 at halftime.

Nine consecutive points by the guests opened the second half to make it 49-70 on a layup netted by Ribas. Dragan Labovic cut it to 58-74, but Harangody hit a triple to make it a 10-point game, 65-85. Alhaji Mohammed carried the Asesoft within 69-85 after 30 minutes. In the final quarter, the teams exchanged spectacular plays with Dedovic scoring the last basket to fix the final score at 84-100.
