Fenerbahce outlasts Baskonia in shootout

Fenerbahce Dogus Istanbul, the reigning Turkish Airlines EuroLeague champions, earned a hard-fought 95-89 win over KIROLBET Baskonia Vitoria Gasteiz in Game 2 of their playoff series on Friday. Fenerbahce assumed a 2-0 lead as the series now moves to Vitoria for Game 3 on Tuesday. It was the 11th consecutive playoffs win for Fenerbahce, which has not lost in this phase under head coach Zeljko Obradovic since he took over the bench in 2013. But the champs had to dig deep for this one. Baskonia, led by hot-hand of sharpshooter Matt Janning, simply refused to give up, but Fenerbahce had more weapons and all the answers on offense. The hosts made 23 of 34 (67.7%) two-point shots, setting their club playoffs record. Brad Wanamaker led the way with 19 points, 4 assists and 3 steals. Jan Vesely had 16 points and 6 rebounds, Nikola Kalinic scored 9 of his 11 points in the third quarter, while Nicolo Melli and Luigi Datome scored 10 apiece. Janning netted 17 points and Vincent Poirier had 14 points plus 7 rebounds for Baskonia. Toko Shengelia scored 12, while Janis Timma, Johannes Voigtmann and Rodrigue Beaubois each scored 11 in defeat.

Baskonia scored first 6 points of the game, and Poirier's dunk had the visitors up 0-6 after less than 90 seconds. After a timeout, Fenerbahce got it going with pair of steals and inside baskets from Nikola Kalinic, Wanamaker and James Nunnally. Timma hit his first triple to keep Baskonia in front, and his second three made it 10-15. Poirier had another dunk, but Wanamaker scored a runner-plus-free throw that sparked a 12-0 run during which Sloukas found Vesely for a dunk and Ahmet Duverioglu had a three-point play to open a 25-17 Fenerbahce lead. Baskonia was held scoreless for more than 3 minutes, but back-to-back triples from Voigtmann and Janning brought the visitors back to within 25-23 after 10 minutes. A layup from Janning and a dunk by Voigtmann, both in transition, put Baskonia back in front, 27-29, early in the second. Sloukas and Marcelinho Huertas traded triples, but then Datome hit his own in transition to Fenerbahce back in front 37-34, midway through the second quarter. The hosts pulled away again after Marko Guduric knocked down a step-back triple and Nunnally followed with a three-point play to make it 48-39. But Timma and Luca Vildoza each downed threes in the final 2 minutes of the quarter as Baskonia stayed close, 53-49, at halftime.

Shengelia had a runner and a jumper to help Baskonia get the lead back after the break, but only briefly. Kalinic followed his three-pointer with a jumper, and Wanamaker drove for a layup-plus-free throw. Kalinic scored 4 more points, giving him 9 in a span of less than 4 minutes, to put the hosts up 68-61. Baskets from Vildoza and Voigtmann kept Baskonia as close as 71-68 after 30 minutes. Voigtmann scored once again inside, and Shengelia hustled for a put-back to tie it up, 72-72, early in the fourth quarter, but that was the final tie. Datome nailed a jumper and Nunnally added a basket. After Janning hit a triple, Datome and Wanamaker answered with long-range daggers, helping Fenerbahce race ahead 84-75 midway through the quarter. Baskonia was not giving up, as Janning nailed another three and Beaubois had a runner to cut the difference to 86-82. But Wanamaker hit a three-pointer and Melli banked a tough jumper to make it 91-82 and seal the deal. Beaubois scored 7 points in the final minute, but it was too little too late for a Baskonia comeback.

“It was a different game than the first one two days ago. This day off always serves to prepare yourself for something a little bit different, and it was absolutely different. They were ready for our kind of defense, and it was necessary to change, and I believe that we changed. It is not important how many points one team scores, the final result is important. And I am very happy how we reacted after a very bad start to the game.”

"Playoff series are always very specific, and the day between games is always important. So we tried to adjust some things, and tried to play some different things. At the beginning of the game, it was 0-6 for them after 1 minute 20 seconds. We started lazy, gave them three easy two-pointers; it is not possible to start the game that way. After that we changed, understood we have to be more aggressive and it was an absolutely different game. I want to thank my players for what they did until now in these two games in the playoffs. Going to Spain with 2-0 is good, but we have to understand it is not over, we need one more victory. Baskonia is a very good team, they have a lot of different possibilities in their game, offense and defense, and it will be very interesting to see how the next game will go. I am very satisfied with the last quarter, how we moved the ball on offense. Almost every possession we had an open shot. We did not score all of them, but that’s not a problem. So, I am very happy to see this. One of the difficult parts of the coach’s job is that you have 12 players and they all deserve to play. But sometimes that’s not possible. Ali Muhammed and Melih Mahumutoglu deserve to play, they work really hard, they are always ready to help the team, and I am sorry that they did not play. Also, thanks to the fans, they made an incredible atmosphere.”

"We missed some small things in our offense in the second half. We made some bad shots and were bit more passive than we had been before. And there were some one-on-one situations where we had problems. It is very difficult to defend Fenerbahce's players because they have great talent. If we want to come back and improve our defense, we need to improve a little bit our one-on-one defense, and rebound. But in general I think we did a good job and we have to consider it and work hard to be competitive in the next games."

“It was a tougher and much harder game than on Wednesday, but we expected that. Baskonia made changes in its game, they did not pressure as much, which we punished very good in the first game. There were other small details, but we reacted good. It is playoff time, every game is tough and physical. We have to prepare for one great, but tough, atmosphere. They will want to play a good game in front of their fans, which might be last of their season. They will go hard, but we will be ready. We are all healthy, and we will be ready.”
VESELY, JAN
Fenerbahce Dogus Istanbul
“The game was great. We started sloppy, but very quickly we stepped up and played our game again. We fought until the end, the fans gave us great energy. They motivated us on every possession, ever defense to give 100 percent, and more. We will give our best to win another game, but winning this series is very far. Next game will be very hard; we play away. They fight hard, and it is going to be a very physical game. We have to be ready for that.”
WANAMAKER, BRAD
Fenerbahce Dogus Istanbul
“We are excited, we took care of business at home. That’s always key in a playoff series. We know it is tough to play [in Vitoria]. It is a tough crowd, they have their backs against the wall, so we have to go out there with mindset of taking a game. I expect even more adjustments in Game 3. Game by game is different. Especially now, we have to go out there and act like we have not won a game. We have to be hungry enough to accomplish our goal of making the Final Four. We took advantage of some situations, and luckily we got the best of our opponents tonight. Coach always talks about that in the playoffs; you’ve got to beat your man one-on-one, you’ve got to be a tougher guy. And tonight we showed it.”
