Real beats Fenerbahce to finish third

Real Madrid finished its season on a winning note by pulling away to beat Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul 75-94 in the third place game on Sunday at Fernando Buesa Arena in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain. Gustavo Ayon starred with 23 points on perfect shooting from the field plus 11 rebounds and Facundo Campazzo set club and Final Four records with 15 assists to lead Real. Fabien Causeur added 13 points and Camapzzo and Trey Thompkins netted 12 points apiece. Kostas Sloukas paced Fenerbahce with 17 points and 6 assists, Melih Mahmutoglu added 14 points and Marko Guduric 11.

Both teams shook up their lineups for the game with Sinan Guler starting for Fenerbahce and Felipe Reyes in the Real lineup. Real pounded the paint early and through 8 points from Ayon and 4 from Reyes built a 7-15 advantage. Jaycee Carroll and Rudy Fernandez added three-pointers as the lead swelled to 9-22. Sloukas and Jan Vesely got Fenerbahce back on track and Guduric free throws narrowed the gap to 16-24 after 10 minutes. Guduric and Nicolo Melli connected on back-to-back threes to cap a 12-3 run that saw Fenerbahce jump ahead 32-31 with 4 minutes left in the half. The teams traded baskets the rest of the way until the break at which point Sloukas pushed his team in front 40-38.

The pace was back and forth with lots of scoring to start the second half. Sloukas hit a pair of threes in a 10-0 Fenerbahce run that put the team ahead 60-56. Ayon and Campazzo helped Real regain control and Los Blancos led 63-69 at the end of the third quarter. Causeur scored 8 in a 0-10 run to start the fourth quarter as Real looked to put the game on ice. Campazzo continued to rack up assists as Real pulled away fro good to finish their EuroLeague campaign on a high note.

Campazzo rewrites record book

Facu Campazzo rewrote the record book with his 15 assists. He set a Real Madrid club record, a Final Four single-game record and the mark for most assists in a single Final Four. The previous Real record was 13, which had been done three times previously – including by Campazzo in November of this season. The Final Four single-game record was 12 by Terrell McIntyre for Montepaschi Siena in the third place game in 2008. Camapzzo reached 21 assists for the weekend, which bested the Final Four record of 18 set by Dimitris Diamantidis for Panathinaikos Athens in 2011.

Ayon makes history, too

Gustavo Ayon's 11-for-11 shooting was the best in a Final Four game and tied for the second-best of any game in EuroLeague history. Maceo Baston made 6-of-6 for Maccabi Tel Aviv in the 2005 semifinal in Moscow, which had been the Final Four record. Ayon tied CSKA's Nando De Colo and FC Barcelona Lassa's Ante Tomic, who have had 11-for-11 shooting nights. The EuroLeague record remains 13 for 13 by Saulius Stombergas for Tau Ceramica Vitoria-Gasteiz in 2001.

Vesely adds to accolades

Freshly-crowned EuroLeague MVP Jan Vesely had a quiet night with just 6 points in 11 minutes, but he did leapfrog – at least for now – CSKA Moscow's Kyle Hines and pass Dejan Bodiroga for third place in Final Four history with 48 made two-point baskets. The all-time leader is David Andersen with 57.

Telling stats

To dispose of Fenerbahce with relative ease, it helped that Real enjoyed a fantastic shooting night. Coach Laso's men made 23 of 35 two-pointers (65.7%) and 11 of 21 threes (52.4%). Those numbers, coupled with Real outrebounding Fenerbahce 23-34, tell the story of the game.

"We already talked about how tough and difficult it is to play this game. I believe tonight we tried to give a different picture than the first semifinal. The players fought a lot, especially in the first half. In the locker room, we were happy to have the lead. But we were not able to protect it. Real Madrid is a team that any kind of situation you are not concentrated, they will punish you by scoring very easy baskets, especially in transition. I will repeat, it was an incredible season for us. Over here, for different reasons, we didn't play our basketball. And this is how it is. I am proud of my players. Now we try to change everything for the game on Thursday in Turkey... [Erick Green] has gone to the hospital, we don’t know anything at the moment."
LASO, PABLO
Real Madrid
"Congratulations to my team for the victory. I think we played a very good game. In most of the aspects we talked about we showed we were ready for this event. I am very proud of the EuroLeague season we had, I think we won a lot of games. We faced a hard playoff. We came here. I am very proud of my players, knowing for sure that this today is one of the most difficult games to play. Everybody must understand this and everybody knows this. But as a coach I am very proud of my team and how we responded to a game like this, mentally and physically. We showed that we were ready. We are leaving with some strange taste in our month. But it’s a lot better to finish a season winning the last game even though it’s not the game that we would like to play.
"I think Compazzo was magnificent. He directed the game very well. Defensively he set the tone. The 15 assists showed how his game is, but I think his defense showed as well. Those figures backed what he did, even though coaches do not always look at the numbers. I think he played a great game and his figures were magnificent as well."

"We tried to show something, despite this condition we are in. This is a catastrophic Final Four for us. Good season, but catastrophic Final Four. We will have to try to learn from it."
GUDURIC, MARKO
Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul
"We tried, gave our best. We were not at 100% before the Final Four. It's been about a month since we had a full team practicing together. Everything came together. I'm sad because we did not deserve this, to finish the EuroLeague season this way, because we played great the entire season so far."
CAUSEUR, FABIEN
Real Madrid
"We played a good game and that was the best way to bounce back from Friday's loss - play hard and win again. It is important to finish the EuroLeague with a good win and good basketball. Once you get out there, you try to compete against a good team, get into the game and play aggressive. Facu [Campazzo] has played well all season, leading the team really well. It is great that he had such a nice record in a Final Four game."
LLULL, SERGIO
Real Madrid
"If may be the third place game, but it was against Fenerbahce, so if you don't play with intensity, they will probably beat you easily. Out of respect for the people, for our fans, for the people who spent their money on tickets and accommodations, we had to play the best way possible. In the end, we managed to win and finish third in the EuroLeague. I want to thank Madrid fans for their support, especially in these tough moments. This is when we need our fans the most. I have always felt appreciated in Madrid, so I thank them for their support; I will keep working hard to help Madrid win more titles."
CAMPAZZO, FACUNDO
Real Madrid
"We wanted to win the game and went out to win it. We knew that the third place game does not bring the same motivation as the final, but we had to play hard for the people who came to see us and for us, to try to play a good game and finish with a win. I would have traded the assists record for making it to the final, obviously. I always leave stats to [the media], you know what to do with it. It helps me keep improving. We did the best we could from the very beginning of the game. We had a good first quarter and even with that, they took the lead. It is normal; they are a good team and we knew they would come back. We played a serious, clean game - if you only give half of the intensity, you take a risk to get injured. We had to play hard for the people who came to see us."
