Kravtsov, Fotu lead CAI past Galatasaray

CAI Zaragoza stayed in the fight to make it to the elimination series in Group N by downing Galatasaray Odeabank 85-68 at home in front of over 7,000 fans on Wednesday. CAI, Galatasaray and Dinamo Banco di Sardegna Sassari have a 3-2 record in Group N, so it will all come down to next week's games. CAI plays on the road against Szolnoki Olaj knowing that a win will send it to the next round, but will also qualify if it loses and Galatasaray beats Sassari. Galatasaray qualifies with a win or if it loses and Szolnoki beats CAI. Slava Kravtsov led the winners with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Isaac Fotu added 14 points, Stevan Jelovac had 13 while Pere Tomas got 11 for CAI. Blake Schilb led Galatasaray with 17 points. Stephane Lasme added 13, Goksenin Koksal got 12 while Sinan Guler had 11 for the guests, that led 20-26 after 10 minutes. CAI rallied to get a 42-39 edge at halftime, extended its margin to 66-47 after 30 minutes and kept full control of the game from that moment until the final buzzer.

Robin Benzing got CAI going with a three-pointer. Stephane Lasme scored down low and erased Joan Sastre's put-back basket with a mid-range jumper. Lasme scored again but Henk Norel followed free throws with a jump hook for a 9-6 CAI lead. Goksenin Koksal struck from downtown and Sinan Guler bettered Tomas Bellas's floater with another triple that gave Galatasaray its first lead, 11-12. Isaac Fotu and Sastre shined with consecutive dunks but Guler hit another three-pointer and Lasme put the guests back ahead, 15-17. Sastre hit a triple but Blake Schilb answered from downtown and added a one-handed jumper in the lane for a 18-22 score. Slava Kravtsov shined with a power layup but a close basket by Joey Dorsey and free throws by Schilb boosted the guests' lead to 20-26 after 10 minutes. Stefan Jelovac followed a three-pointer with a layup to keep CAI within 25-26 early in the second quarter. Vladimir Micov stepped up with a triple, Nate Linhart and Dorsey traded close baskets and free throws by Jelovac kept the hosts within 29-31. Guler, Benzing and Fotu split free throws but Sastre allowed CAI to regain the lead, 33-32. Kravtsov shined with a three-point play but a jumper by Lasme and a corner three-pointer by Koksal put Galatasaray back ahead, 36-37. Kravtsov scored again and Fotu followed a put-back slam with a baseline jumper to restore a 42-39 CAI lead at halftime.

Micov downed a jumper immediately after the break but Fotu banked in a shot and added another dunk to give CAI a 46-41 lead. Pere Tomas took over with a three-pointer and Fotu also struck from downtown to make it a double-digit game, 52-42. Koksal joined the three-point shootout but a red hot Tomas also hit one from beyond the arc and soon added another basket for a 57-45 CAI lead. Schilb hit another floater but Tomas - who else? - nailed another three-pointer that broke the game open, 60-47. Jelovac scored again and an outstanding Kravtsov allowed CAI to make it a 19-point game, 66-47, after 30 minutes. Dorsey tried to change things with a put-back basket early in the fourth quarter and Schilb added a three-pointer to give Galatasaray hope at 66-52. Sek Henry finished a broken play with a layup-plus-foul and Linhart bettered Schilb's free throws with a bomb from downtown that sealed the outcome, 72-54. Koksal stepped up with a three-point play but Linhart shined with a fast break basket and fed Kravtsov for a dunk in a 6-0 run that boosted CAI's lead to 78-57 with 4 minutes left. Galatasaray never gave up but all CAI fans had plenty of time to celebrate a big win.

"It was hard for us to get into the game. They had a good start and we struggled a bit, but as soon as we started playing our game, we were able to raise our defensive level, especially in the second quarter, in which we limited them to 13 points. Pere Tomas gave us another push on defense in the third quarter and we limited them to 8 points in that period to start getting a good lead. We managed to collect a lot of steals, locked up our defensive board and managed to get a lot of fast break situations. We lacked a little bit more mobility on offense, but at the same time, Slava [Kravtsov] made the difference in the paint and that helped us a lot. I am happy with all of my players' efforts, also because our fans deserved this. They have been perfect in helping the team and I have to thank them their effort and what they do for us, not today, but always."

"On offense we found our regular offense in the first quarter, but they stopped our offense after that. CAI played aggressive defense tonight, and we did not have a reaction to their energy. We lost this game in the second and third quarters. It was great game for Zaragoza. For us, our new players did not give us anything, 0 points and 0 assists from Curtis Jerrells and Chuck Davis. And Joey Dorsey got a technical in the most important time of the game. Congratulations to Zaragoza, they played a really good game tonight."

"It was a bad game for us. These guys play good, they beat us in every aspect of the game. It was a good win for them, they really needed it. It was a home game and they protected home court. We got to erase it and get ready for the next game. The key of the game was rebounding, but they did everything. We missed open shots, they made shots, they rebounded, they defended everything."
