CSKA finishes season in third place

CSKA Moscow wrapped up its 2016-17 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague season by downing Real Madrid 70-94 in the third place game at Sinan Erdem Dome in Istanbul, Turkey on Sunday. The victory over Madrid not only served as a sweet finish to an otherwise disappointing Final Four for the outgoing champs, but ensured CSKA the league’s overall best record for the season at 26-9. Kyle Hines paced six CSKA scorers in double figures with 14 points and 7 rebounds. Nando De Colo and Aaron Jackson added 13 points each, Cory Higgins and Vitaly Fridzon scored 12 apiece and Andrey Vorontsevich totaled 10. Hines moved into fifth place on the all-time Final Four rebounding list with 55, while Milos Teodosic, who finished with 7 points and 6 assists, is now seventh in Final Four history with 155 points and tied with Euroleague Basketball Legends Dimitris Diamantidis and Sarunas Jasikevicius with for second place with 46 assists. Gustavo Ayon and Jonas Maciulis led Madrid with 11 points each. Sergio Llull scored 7 points to overtake Jaka Lakovic for sixth place in EuroLeague history with 2,528 points. The biggest difference between the sides was three-point shooting; while CSKA made 12 of 26 (46.1%), Madrid attempted the same amount and made only 6 (23.1%).

Jackson got CSKA going with a driving layup and Vorontsevich struck from downtown for a 0-5 lead. Ayon and Maciulis stepped up for Madrid, but Teodosic and Hines kept CSKA in charge, 7-12. Fridzon scored in penetration, Cory Higgins added a stop-and-pop jumper and Hines dunked to make it a double-digit game, 8-18. Luka Doncic hit free throws, but Semen Antonov hit a three-pointer and Hines added a layup for a 10-23 CSKA lead after 10 minutes. Free throws by Fridzon and a triple by Teodosic boosted CSKA's lead to 14-28 midway through the second quarter. Felipe Reyes stepped up with a three-point play and Dontaye Draper added a triple, but Higgins had 5 points in a 0-11 CSKA run that broke the game open, 20-41. Ayon and Andres Nocioni - in his final EuroLeague game - led an 8-0 Madrid run, but free throws by Nikita Kurbanov and a three-pointer by De Colo kept CSKA way ahead, 32-45, at halftime.

Jeffery Taylor followed a triple with a dunk to bring Madrid within single digits, 37-45, right after the break. De Colo rescued CSKA with a couple of layups and free throws. Jackson soon added a three-pointer for a 42-56 lead. The teams traded baskets at full speed and De Colo got help from Higgins and Teodosic to keep CSKA rolling at 53-67. Jaycee Carroll nailed one from beyond the arc, but Higgins scored in penetration to fix the score at 56-69 after 30 minutes. Fridzon shined with a three-pointer early in the fourth quarter and Vorontsevich and James Augustine boosted CSKA's lead to 60-76. Jackson followed a big triple with a driving layup and soon struck again from downtown to seal the outcome at 67-84 with over three minutes left.

LASO, PABLO
Real Madrid
"Congratulations to CSKA for the victory. Probably one of the most difficult games to play. A lot of times the team that wants it a little bit more from the beginning gets it .And that’s what happened today. We tried, but we were playing a great team and we were not able to come back into the game. I told my players the great thing about being here is all the work we did before was great. Today we are disappointed and sad; whatever you call it. But if you told us 10 months ago that we wouldn’t be here we would have been more sad. It’s not how we wanted it, but we still have goals ahead of us. And to achieve that we must play our best basketball."
ITOUDIS, DIMITRIS
CSKA Moscow
"I would like to congratulate my team on the effort. The third place might not get you a medal, but it’s a reward for the team for the hard work. Third place is better than fourth. I would like to mention the guys who played in their first Final Fours and scored points. Semen Antonov, Mikhail Kulagin and Joel Freeland. It was a big celebration when Mikhail scored that basket. It showed that the team is united."

LLULL, SERGIO
Real Madrid
"These are difficult games t play because you play for nothing. We had a big effort two days ago and we had a great team like CSKA in front of us that was better than us tonigh. It's that simple. I think the team is doing things well. It's not easy to get to the Final Four, I hope we're here again next year."
NOCIONI, ANDRES
Real Madrid
"The team was not good tonight. We did not compete tonight and it's just the way it goes. I don't think this affects us in the future for the Spanish League. I am happy to have been in two Final Fours and have won one. That’s more than many can say."
REYES, FELIPE
Real Madrid
"It's hard to recover from the defeat in the semis. It's true that we could have had more intensity in this game, that sometimes it's more like a punishment than a prize. They came out more focused and aggressive and took the win. They wanted to take the win from the beginning and played tougher. We were a team without a soul and without hunger. We have to get back on our feet."
HINES, KYLE
CSKA Moscow
"We wanted to finish the season on a good note. We are not only playing for ourselves, but we are playing for our club and we have a lot of respect for the club, we play for the fans that came. And even though it was not a championship game, we still had to go out and play hard and show everybody we are not going to quit."
JACKSON, AARON
CSKA Moscow
"It was not easy, especially only 48 hours after a tough loss against Olympiacos, but the president, our coaching staff and everybody who represents us wanted us to win this game, they told us they want us to win this game. I shot triples well this Final Four. I think am a good three-point shooter, last year I had a bad year shooting three, but throughout this regular season I shot threes well."
HIGGINS, CORY
CSKA Moscow
"It's hard to recover from the defeat in the semis. It's true that we could have had more intensity in this game, that sometimes it's more like a punishment than a prize. They came out more focused and aggressive and took the win. They wanted to take the win from the beginning and played tougher. We were a team without a soul and without hunger. We have to get back on our feet."
DE COLO, NANDO
CSKA Moscow
"We played with character and well, because we are professionals and we have to stay that way. This surely is not the game we wanted to play, but we have to take every game seriously, and that’s what we did."
