Budivelnik Kiev earned its first Last 16 victory by beating Union Olimpija Ljubljana 88-76 at home on Wednesday. The hosts took control with a 15-0 run that bridged the first and second quarters and never looked back. Olimpija did not quit and closed within 5 in the fourth quarter, but a 12-2 charge helped the hosts ice the game. Darjus Lavrinovic led the Budivelnik attack with 23 points and 8 rebounds, Blake Ahearn netted 20 points, Michailis Anisimov scored 15 and Janis Strelnieks flirted with a triple-double: 10 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists. Alen Omic paced Olimpija with 21 points, Deividas Gailius amassed 18 points and 7 assists and Sasu Salin scored 16 in defeat.

Neither team led by more than 5 at any point in the first quarter; the largest lead was 16-21 for Olimpija on an Omic basket-plus-foul. Budivelnik rallied to take a 24-23 lead on Ahearn free throws at the end of the quarter. The hosts put their collective foot on the gas to start the second quarter. Led by big men Lavrinovic and Anisimov and forward Dainius Salenga, Budivelnik completed a run of 15 unanswered points to make it 35-23. Salin drilled a three to end the Olimpija drought at five minutes. Lavrinovic and Salenga helped protect a double-digit advantage before Salin brought the visitors within 52-44 at halftime. Ahearn took charge at the start of the second half as the hosts reeled off the first 9 points of the third quarter. Luka Rupnik and Salin helped Olimpija stay alive, however a Strelniks three made it 73-63 through three quarters. Nebojsa Joksimovic carried Olimpija back within 5 early in the fourth quarter, however three-point plays by Anisimov and Ricky Minard helped restore a double-digit Budivelnik lead, which reached 85-70 as the hosts cruised to victory.

"Everybody played as the opponent allowed. Today there were moments when we focused on the game in the paint, and it was right decision for us. As we expected, it was a hard game. Olimpija played the basketball we prepared for, but unfortunately, we did not do all that was prepared. Olimpija made so many three-point attempt, especially when Salin was on the floor; they were constantly looking for him, and he was trying to score. Plus, they had a very quick transition from defense to offense. In some moments we quickly came back and when we did not, they punished us. We made so many turnovers, it’s very bad and strange for such a confident victory like this. Unfortunately, we were relaxed in the end of the game, looked for easy ways and in a couple of situations made wrong decisions and simply threw the ball out. I think the final score could have been better for us, if we had not made those mistakes in the end. "

"My congratulations to the coach of Budivelnik. Unfortunately, I can’t be satisfied with our game tonight, especially in defense. We allowed too many free shots and lost our rebounds; we can’t beat such a good team like Budivelnik like that. At moments we were close, but every time we missed our concentration, it was crucial and a reason for the defeat. Budivelnik deserves this victory. Yes, we lost two games in this group, but anyway, we still have four games to fight for our chance in the next round. "
