Real Madrid outguns EA7 Milan

Real Madrid unloaded its offensive weapons to earn a 90-101 Game of the Week victory over EA7 Emporio Armani Milan at a sold-out Mediolanum Forum. Anthony Randolph was the chief inspiration in his team’s triumph with a big double-double of 20 points and 14 rebounds, and he received plenty of help from fellow big man Othello Hunter, who scored 18. In the backcourt, Sergio Llull registered 18 points and 6 assists, Rudy Fernandez added 13 points and Jaycee Carroll 11. Milan’s challenge was led by Ricky Hickman, who contributed 19 points and 5 assists in defeat, while Rakim Sanders scored 16, Krunoslav Simon tallied 13 points and 6 assists and Jamel McLean added 11 points.

Early on the teams traded three-pointers and exchanged leads before Llull’s 300th career Euroleague three-pointer helped Madrid pull away. A pair of Carroll threes in the second quarter gave the visitor their first double-digit lead of the night, with Hunter also producing big plays to protect that advantage as Madrid led 41-52 at the break. Hickman’s heroics kept Milan alive during the third quarter, but the visiting team still established a 15-point lead before the host, inspired by McLean and Sanders, went on a 17-4 run to bridge the third and fourth quarters, making it a 2-point game. But Los Blancos found renewed resolve when it mattered the most, pulling away again to claim a big road win.

Head Coaches

REPESA, JASMIN
EA7 Emporio Armani Milan
"It's disappointing because of our fans. We tried, but we made too many mistakes, especially at the defensive end of the floor. Against those teams if you go down by 10 or more it's difficult to come back. We haven't had enough concentration. Defensively my teams are not used to allowing 92 points per game on average. With our experience and the players we had we should have done better."
LASO, PABLO
Real Madrid

“We know it’s going to be a tough season, every team is very competitive, and we know one day you can be not at your best and lose. On Tuesday we didn’t play a good game but we bounced back, it was a very difficult game but we got it. Offensively we played good, we moved the ball well, in the first half we used a lot of screens for Carroll who hit some important shots, then we were able to control the rhythm, I think we needed to run more in the second half but we were tired, but I’m happy because everybody contributed and it’s an important victory winning here. I know Milan is going to be competitive all year and it’s not going to be easy winning here.”

“We knew it was important to be concentrated. We were very focused, we moved the ball well and got good shots. Defensively we adjusted pretty well, they made a couple of dangerous runs but we contained them when they came back and made it close.”

HICKMAN, RICKY
EA7 Emporio Armani Milan
"Of course Real Madrid is one of the top teams, but you know when you allow them to score 100 points you are not going to win. We had our moments, but let it slip away. I think our team is still good and losing to two of the best teams in the league doesn't change our outlook."
HUNTER, OTHELLO
Real Madrid
"Defense was our main focus today. In the last game our defense was pretty much bad, and we wanted to come back with a solid game defensively. I think we did that. Every game really matters and going on the road to win a big game is good."
RANDOLPH, ANTHONY
Real Madrid

“It was a team win, no question. After having that tough loss at home against Baskonia we had to come out here and play great defense, rebound, take care of the ball and bounce back from that loss. The good thing was that we had another game in the next two days. I love it here, it’s probably one of the best teams I’ve ever played on – the organisation from top to bottom is great, everybody takes care of everybody else and it’s a great group of guys.”

“We have a great team and a lot of room for improvement. You want to win every game you play and getting a win on the road against a tough team like this tonight is big for us.”
