2009-10U18 HospitaletRound 3
Joan Tomas - IJT DKV JoventutDKV Joventut advanced to the semifinals of the Ciutat de L'Hospitalet tournament after a 75-68 victory over KK Split in the closing game of Group A on Tuesday evening in L'Hospitalet, Spain. The win sends DKV to face Cajasol in the first semifinals game on Wednesday. The winner will face the winning side between Alba Berlin and Unicaja Malaga in the title game. The teams have more than just the tournament title to fight for as the gold medal winner will be handed a ticket to the Nike International Junior Tournament that takes place during the Euroleague Final Four weekend in Paris. Next month two more tournaments will send their champion to the prestigious NIJT in addition to Zalgiris Kaunas, which qualified last week. DKV scored the last 9 points of the first half to take a 41-24 halftime lead, and held on to it throughout the entire second half on the way to the sweet win. Joan Tomas recorded a monster double-double with 23 points and 18 rebounds in less than 25 minutes, Alejandro Barrera added 15 points and Albert Ventura scored 12. Toni Katic added another big scoring performance with 25 points on 66% shooting, but didn't dish any assists and turned the ball over 8 times. Filip Najev added 23 points and 11 rebounds.

Tomas opened the game with a three-pointer that put Split behind from the very first moment. A three-minute scoring drought by Split allowed DKV to take a 16-9 lead late in the first and enter the second period with an 18-13 lead. Tomas added another three early in the second and soon the gap reached double figures. Katic scored only 2 points in the first 15 minutes, but woke up in time with 7 points in a row to make it 32-24 inside the last three minutes of the half, only DKV had other plans. Four players scored the last 9 points until the halftime buzzer, capped by another three-pointer by Tomas as the teams entered the locker rooms separated 41-24. Najev started to work around the rim and Katic improved his scoring, but Barrera and Ventura kept the gap at double digits. A dunk by Katic sparked 6 quick unanswered points by Split to cut the margin in half to 57-51, only to see Tomas score 5 points in a row and quiet things down for his team. Split was ready for one last effort as Vicko Perasovic scored 4 in a row from the charity stripe, but saw Barrera reply with a three pointer and 2 more from the free throw line to keep Split far enough away entering the closing minute.
