Dubljevic leads Valencia over CAI Zaragoza

Bojan Dubljevic scored 24 points to lead Valencia Basket to an 87-68 victory over CAI Zaragoza on Tuesday. The result put Valencia atop Group C with a 2-0 record, while CAI dropped to 1-1. CAI started strong, which led to a close first quarter, but John Shurna sparked an 11-0 start to the second quarter and Valencia never looked back. Shurna and Fernando San Emeterio added 10 points apiece for Valencia. CAI outrebounded the hosts 26-38, but was doomed by 19 turnovers and poor three-point shooting (4 of 18). Stevan Jelovac paced CAI with 20 points, Isaac Fotu added 11 and Nate Linhart 10.

CAI got off to a great start as Henk Norel scored the game’s first basket before a Linhart triple and layups by Joan Sastre and Tomas Bellas made it 2-9. A Rafa Martinez three-pointer awoke the Valencia attack, but it was 7-15 after Jelovac scored inside. The deficit was cut quickly through a Dubljevic three-pointer and a San Emeterio basket-plus-foul. Linhart and Fotu kept CAI ahead, but 5 straight Dubljevic points put the hosts ahead for the first time. After a free throw each for Halil Kanacevic and Guillem Vives, the first quarter ended at 21-20. Valencia took charge at the start of the second quarter with an 11-0 run in which Shurna starred with 7 points. Drake Diener ended the CAI drought with 2 free throws, but a Dubljevic put-back made it 36-22. CAI managed to get its offense going, but could not get any closer. Jordi Trias and San Emeterio gave the hosts a 48-31 halftime advantage.

San Emeterio started the second half with a triple to establish a 20-point difference. Jelovac countered with a basket-plus-foul, but Dubljevic and co. continued to generate points. Sam Van Rossom’s three-pointer made it 59-36. Linhart tripled and Fotu scored twice as CAI looked to mount a comeback. However Jon Stefansson scored the last two baskets of the third quarter to end it at 73-50. Jelovac started the fourth with a triple and Diener added a basket. Jelovac further closed the gap to 75-61. But CAI never seriously threatened and 4 Dublevic free throws helped ice the game with time to spare.

"We had a good reaction to their fine start. We managed to change the rhythm of the game in defense with the players coming off the bench. From then on, we also were fine in offense. Dubljevic's threes balanced the game first and then in the second quarter we showed good rhythm and playing good defense."
