Doncic shines again for undefeated Madrid

Luka Doncic dominated once again as Real Madrid continued its perfect start to the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague season with a resounding 66-87 road win at Zalgiris Kaunas on Thursday night. Madrid improved to 4-0 on the season, while Zalgiris dropped to 2-2 record. Madrid trailed for only a single possession the entire night and pulled away for good behind 14 third-quarter points from Doncic to lead 42-61. Doncic finished with a career-high 28 points plus 9 rebounds and 4 assists, while Facundo Campazzo had 12 points and 6 assists. Gustavo Ayon and Jeffrey Taylor also scored 12 apiece. Kevin Pangos netted 20 points for Zalgiris and Antanas Kavaliauskas scored 16 in defeat.

Madrid had a great start to the game with Ayon doing everything. He scored the first 6 points collected 2 steals and delivered an assist as the visitors opened things with a 2-10 lead. A triple from Paulius Jankunas got Zalgiris going, before Kavaliauskas heated up, scoring three times inside and cutting the gap to 11-15. Dino Radoncic hit a corner three for the visitors, but Pangos finished the first quarter with a floater and a triple late in possession to make it 16-18 after 10 minutes. Kavaliauskas kept working inside and Pangos went for a driving layup that gave Zalgiris its first lead, 26-25. But it was short-lived, as Campazzo nailed back-to-back threes before Rudy Fernandez added 4 points and found Taylor for a corner triple and the first double-digit lead of the night, 28-38. Pangos answered with a three, but Ayon scored in traffic to end the first half with Madrid holding a 31-40 lead.

Early in the third quarter, Kavaliauskas kept the hosts in rage with 5 points, including a three-point play, but Madrid quickly pulled away behind Doncic. The teenage guard strung together 9 points, including a jumper and a triple in transition, for a 38-54 margin. Another three by Doncic followed by a fastbreak dunk by Campazzo extended it to 42-61. Zalgiris was not giving up and Brandon Davies scored 6 points late in the third to make it 50-63 with 10 minutes to play. If there was any hope for the hosts, it diminished after Fernandez hit a tough three to open the scoring in the fourth and then Taylor hit back-to-back triples from opposite corners for a 53-73 lead. There was no coming back from that deficit for Zalgiris, as coach Sarunas Jasikevicius gave a chance to Zalgiris youngsters Martynas Arlauskas and Gytis Masiulis. Both of them, as well as Madrid’s youngster Santiago Yusta, scored before the final buzzer as Madrid cruised to victory.

“Congratulations to Madrid. It was a much better team today. We made too many mental mistakes, and there was not enough fighting to win the game.”
LASO, PABLO
Real Madrid
“We were very consistent defensively. It was difficult for us, because they have a big squad, they post up a lot, but we were able to get in good position, help and recover. We defended well the pick-and-roll. Pangos had a good game for them, but we did not suffer on the rebounds and we were able to control their rhythm a little bit. The second half was better. We moved the ball very well and we got open jumpers. It is an important win for us here, knowing that Zalgiris is playing well right now. Injuries are a problem for everyone. The worst thing for your coach is having injuries on your team. All I can ask my players is to keep playing like they are doing, keep fighting. We will try to get somebody to help us, to recover some of the players, but I think we have to give a lot of credit to the guys who are playing now. Doncic already played very good last year. He is a great decision-maker and that helps him. I think tonight he had a great game because he was hot shooting. But sometimes he helps us in so many things. But Campazzo played a great game for us, he controlled the rhythm. Felipe and Ayon were awesome underneath the basket, Maciulis, Radoncic, Taylor on defense. It’s more of a team thing, although Luka rises a little bit above the rest.”

Players

PANGOS, KEVIN
Zalgiris Kaunas
"I just don’t think we played well enough. We had some errors and mistakes as a team, and we have to improve on that stuff. You can always learn from every game. You never play a perfect game. We got to play harder, take a better care of the ball, get better defensive stops. There are so many things we can take out of this game and improve on."
KAVALIAUSKAS, ANTANAS
Zalgiris Kaunas
"I think we gave up some easy baskets in the beginning. They got into their rhythm, and we made some mental mistakes. That’s what costs us the game, a lot of mental mistakes. We came out to play, came out to win. We wanted to win, but we have to move on. We have to learn from the mistakes, keep on playing and keep on getting better."
TAYLOR, JEFFERY
Real Madrid
"I think we played really good defense, we moved the ball really well, passing the ball. Obviously we made open shots, too, but I think we played well together on offense and defense. I think right now we are playing really well. I think we can get a lot better, do a lot of things better, but right now we are playing well, playing together, and playing good defense. "
DONCIC, LUKA
Real Madrid
“I think in the second half we did a great job defending, running and rebounding. We have many players who can do everything on the court. We are a great team. We stick together, if we are winning or losing, and that is our key.”
