Real Madrid moved to within one win of its second straight ADIDAS NEXT GENERATION TOURNAMENT title in L’Hospitalet by beating Union Olimpija Ljubljana 74-48 to reach the final of the annual event. Madrid used a 25-5 run spanning the second and third quarters to take control of the game and will play either FC Barcelona or Baloncesto Seville in the final. The 15-year-old Luka Doncic paced Madrid with 13 points, 13 rebounds, four assists and four steals while Felipe Dos Anjos scored 14 points, Santiago Yusta and Emanuel Cate both scored 12 points and Samba NDiaye collected four points and 11 rebounds. Blaz Mesicek led Olimpija in scoring with 18 points to go with four rebounds, three assists and two steals and Haris Cucovic added 10 points in the loss.

Olimpija failed to score on its first three possessions and watched as Madrid opened a 6-0 lead. Mesicek finally put the Slovenian team on the board at the 7:50 minute mark. An Aljaz Stopar trey trimmed it to 8-5 before Madrid pushed the lead to 12-5. Union Olimpija picked up a big basket by Luka Kraljevic after two offensive rebounds on the possession to make it 12-11 and Nejc Martincic’s triple gave Union Olimpija its first lead at 12-14. Cate evened the game back with two free throws but Cucovic hit two free throws and Mesicek had a layup and two fouls shots to open a 15-22 margin. Madrid got the gap to 17-22 after 10 minutes on an Andreas Rico layup at the buzzer. Neither team scored in the second quarter until Doncic’s free throw at the 7:59 minute mark to make it 18-22. After Dos Anjos made it 22-22, Cucovic scored back-to-back baskets to re-establish a six-point lead at 20-26. The cushion was still 24-28 after a Mesicek basket, but then Madrid shut down the Olimpija offense. Dos Anjos evened the game at 28-28 on a put-back and Doncic scored to give Madrid the lead. Yusta added a layup and three on consecutive possessions to finish a 13-0 run and take a 37-28 advantage. Cucovic’s layup with seven seconds left in the second quarter ended a 5:25 minute scoreless stretch and Olimpija trailed 37-30 at intermission.

After Daniel De La Rua started the third quarter with a three-ball, Mesicek hit a free throw and Jan Strmcnik scored to make it 40-33. Madrid then raced ahead on a 9-0 run with Doncic completing a three-point play and then a steal and big dunk while Yusta followed by going coast-to-coast after a defensive rebound for a layup to make it 49-33. Mesicek’s driving layup snapped Olimpija’s 3:17 minute scoreless stretch to make it 49-35 and the guard nailed a three-ball to trim the gap to 49-38. Two Jonathan Barreiro free throws pushed the Madrid cushion back to 14 points at 54-40 before Martincic knocked down a three-ball to cut the margin to 54-43. Madrid’s lead was 56-43 after three quarters. Cucovic opened the fourth quarter to get the deficit down to 56-45 but Madrid responded with tough defense in holding Union Olimpija scoreless for more than four minutes to open a 62-45 lead. Stopar’s three-ball ended the scoring rut and got the gap down to 62-48 with five minutes to play. But Madrid had too many offensive weapons and Olimpija lacked the firepower to get back into the game. Madrid scored the final 12 points of the game, giving up just five points in the fourth quarter.
