Khimki storms into eighthfinals with 13th straight win

Egor Vyaltsev - Khimki Moscow Region - EC13 (photo bckhimki.ru)Khimki Moscow Region became the first team to advance to the Eurocup eighthfinals on Wednesday when it romped past CEZ Nymburk 106-85 for its 13th consecutive Eurocup victory. Egor Vyaltsev scored 18 points to lead seven Khimki scorers in double figures. The hosts reeled off 19 straight points from late in the first quarter into the second in building 49-20 lead. Nymburk rallied back to within 8 in the third quarter before Mike Green took charge and guided Khimki to victory. James Augustine and Marko Popovic added 15 points apiece, Green scored 13, Mickael Gelabale and Petteri Koponen each scored 11 and Kreso Loncar 10 for the winners. Koponen also dished 8 assists and Popovic passed for 6. Tre Simmons paced Nymburk with 20 points, Dylan Page and Vojtech Hruban had 15 and Rasid Mahalbasic posted 12 points and 6 assists. Rado Rancik scored 9 to move into second place on the Eurocup’s career scoring charts with 1,065, passing Mire Chatman.

Tomas Pomikalek put Nymburk on the board first with a pair of free throws before Loncar put Khimki in front. Augustine slam made it 11-6, but a pair of Page triples kept Nymburk close. However a Gelabale three and Augustine layup pushed the hosts to 24-16 after 10 minutes. Khimki then reeled off the first 15 points of the second quarter – 5 each from Popovic and Vyaltsev – to take a 23-point lead. Ruslan Pateev padded the lead to 49-20 midway through the quarter. Vlado Ilievski helped Nymburk trim the gap with 8 straight points, but a Mike Green triple ended the half at 54-32. Simmons heated up and a Hruban jumper carried the visitors within 61-45. Page, Simmons and Hruban netted successive threes to trim the gap to 10. Ilievski free throws capped a 0-11 run to make it 64-56. Green ended the drought for Khimki with a triple. Green went on to accumulate 10 points in a 12-1 run in helping the hosts restore a comfortable lead, 78-61, through three quarters. Rancik scored his historic basket to open the fourth quarter, but back-to-back threes from Vyaltsev made it 90-71 and the hosts put the game away.

Head Coaches

KURTINAITIS, RIMAS
Khimki Moscow Region
"We started well and began to dominate from the very first minute. In the second half our opponent managed to make a comeback, but everything was under our control and there was no cause for anxiety. I’m happy we played like a team and made probably the largest number of assists tonight. Also we showed high two-point and three-point shooting percentages."
KEMZURA, KESTUTIS
CEZ Basketball Nymburk
"The game was done in the first half. We spoke about having the proper attitude and concentration, but we couldn’t play against Khimki the way we used to. We tried to slip in and expected that after the game against CSKA our opponent would be slack, but teams like Khimki don’t forgive your mistakes. At halftime we had a rough talk in the locker room and in the second half we played much better. It was pleasant for me to be back in Khimki, where I spent two years."

Players

KOPONEN, PETTERI
Khimki Moscow Region
"It was a good game for us. In the first half we were up by 30 points and it seemed like the game was over. But when the young guys came in we lost some rhythm and allowed Nymburk make a comeback in the third quarter. Nevertheless we controlled the course of the game and scored a very comfortable win. We made more than 30 assists today; that is a great result."
