Kalise Gran Canaria advanced to the ULEB Cup Last 16 round by downing KK Bosna 89-69 on Tuesday night. The result erased an 89-82 loss in the first leg last week in Bosnia. In the Last 16, Gran Canaria will face Galatasaray Cafè Crown with the first match scheduled for March 11 in Istanbul. A 13-0 run in the first quarter gave the first serious lead to Gran Canaria. It grew to 30-18 late in the second period and to 38-22 by halftime. The hosts made another big run back from the lockers to get ahead 60-30 and practically close the contest. Kornel David led the way for Gran Canaria with 23 points, Carl English collected 16, Marcus Norris added 13 with 7 assists while Nik Caner-Medley finished with 11. Lance Williams had 19 points and 7 rebounds for KK Bosna and Goran Ikonic added 15.

Edin Bavcic gave an early 0-4 margin to KK Bosna, but the hosts answered immediately with a 13-0 run highlighted by three-pointers from Norris and English. The cushion grew to the double figures, 18-7, with another basket from downtown from Caner-Medley, before Williams completed a three-point play for the guests. But Roberto Guerra from the foul line fixed the first quarter scoring at 20-10. Williams opened fire in the second quarter from mid range, then Ikonic scored from beyond the arc to get to 24-15. David fueled the hosts in the paint to rise to 30-18 with three minutes left to halftime. Ikonic and David exchanged three-pointers, but the Hungarian big man of Gran Canaria remained hot to finish the first half with a mid-range jumper for the final 38-22 for the hosts.

Jim Moran raised the difference to 42-22 early in the third quarter. Dzenan Rahimic then tried to take charge for KK Bosna with a pair of scores, but a 14-3 charge with 7 points from English pushed the hosts to 56-29. A basket in the paint from Sitapha Savane made it a 30-point margin for the hosts, 60-30. The guests showed pride trying to cut the difference and Williams scored from the foul line to close to 64-42. But then David fixed the score at 69-44 after 30 minutes. Bryan Bailey, Williams and Ikonic scored three baskets in a row to reduce the difference to 73-56 at the midway point of the last quarter, but Gran Canaria remained in control to the final buzzer with English posting the last basket for the final 89-69.

"I think that our breakaway early was important, coming when their point guard, Bailey, got his second foul. We were aggressive the first half on defense and we got a lead that held up in the second half, when we had the support of the fans and could take advantage of Bosna's tiredness. Our fans understood the importance of advancing. We were witness to two great atmospheres for these games, first in Sarajevo with 6,000 fans. There, I told Bosna that they would find the same enthusiasm or more here. I think they have been two unbeatable crowds for their teams and both respectful of the opponent, which is good for playing basketball."

"I congratulate Gran Canaria on their qualification. I believe they have a strong team that plays in the best national league in Europe. I have nothing bad to say about my players. We lost some players in our rotations due to the foul problems of Bailey. We are not used to playing such tough games in our league, and as such don't have players with sufficient experience to face them. I wish the best for Kalise Gran Canaria in the ULEB Cup and the ACB."
