Nanterre routs Izmir to win Group I

JSF Nanterre routed Pinar Karsyiaka Izmir 76-57 to clinch first place in Group I with a 4-2 record. The French champs advanced to the eighthfinals, where they will face Budivlenik Kiev. A 14-2 run late in the first quarter gave a 27-14 advantage to the home team from which they never looked back. Johan Passave-Ducteil and Deshaun Thomas paced the winners by scoring 11 points each, while David Lighty and Sergii Gladyr netted 10 apiece in a balanced offensive performance. Esteban Batista drilled 11 points and Soner Senturk added 10 in defeat.

Batista scored a short jumper for a 4-7 lead for the visitors; Lighty tied the game from downtown. Bobby Dixon hit a three for Karsiyaka and Will Daniels made a dunk for a new tie at 11-11, then Lighty put in front Nanterre by finishing a fastbreak, 13-12. David Lisch from the three-point line and Thomas’s jumper capped a 14-2 run to give the home team a 27-14 advantage as the first quarter finished. Thomas from mid range made it 31-17 early in the second. Batista’s slam made it 31-21, then Marc Judith drained a three and a layup to raise the difference to 38-23. Jon Diebler from downtown finished a run of 7 consecutive points by the visitors to climb within 40-32, but Trenton Meacham scored with seconds left to halftime, 42-32.

Hersek opened the third quarter by completing a three-point-play, then Passave-Ducteil and Batista exchanged baskets in the paint, 48-37. Thomas and Meacham pushed Nanterre to 58-42 before Afik Guven and Lisch both nailed jumpers, while Senturk’s free throw made it 60-45 for the hosts after 30 minutes. Inan Koc tried to keep the guests alive from mid range, but 6 unanswered points for Nanterre made it 66-47 after minutes where defense prevailed. The hosts remained in control and Daniels from three-point range extended the cushion to 73-53, while Jeremy Nzeulie and Guven fixed the final 76-57 for Nanterre.

JSF Nanterre
"Tonight was a great performance for our team, we manage to get first place in a difficult and balanced group. It's the highlight of a good European season. We used the Euroleague as an experience, but here there was no calculation to be done, we just had to win, it was a playoffs game and that's how I think we approached it. Budivelnyk Kiev is a team we are familiar with. It's a great team that can dominate us there, but it can be a balanced series. "
SARICA, UFUK
Pinar Karsiyaka Izmir
"We had little chances to advance, but at half time we knew about the result so it was difficult to find motivation to get back on the court. Nanterre is a very difficult team to play, we want to congratulate them, they were unbeaten here. "
