Vesely, Datome lead Fenerbahce past Bayern

Fenerbahce Istanbul survived a tough test by downing FC Bayern Munich 88-84 at home on Thursday. Fenerbahce improved to 4-1, while Bayern dropped to 2-3. Luigi Datome led five Fenerbahce scorers in double digits with 19 points on 4-of-5 three-point shooting. Jan Vesely added 16 points, Nikola Kalinic had 11, Marko Guduric and Joffrey Lauvergne each scored 10 while Kostas Sloukas dished 10 assists for Fenerbahce. Devin Booker led Bayern with 15 points. Vladimir Lucic added 13, Stefan Jovic 12 and Petteri Koponen 11.

Kalinic and Lauvergne shined early and free throws by Datome gave Fenerbahce an 11-7 lead. Lucic stepped up for Bayern and a dunk by Booker gave Bayern its first lead, 13-14. Three-pointers by Booker and Nemanja Dangubic soon boosted the visitors' lead to 21-24. Ahmet Duverioglu dunked and Sloukas followed a triple with free throws for a 28-26 Fenerbahce lead after 10 minutes. A three-pointer by Jovic tied the game again, 33-33, early in the second quarter. Vesely kept pushing Fenerbahce while Ali Muhammed and Datome each struck from downtown to give Fenerbahce a 43-37 lead. Dangubic and Koponen brought Bayern within 49-48 at halftime. Booker took over after the break and Danilo Barthel followed a three-pointer with a huge dunk to cause the hosts to stop the game at 56-59. Duverioglu rescued Fenerbahce and a layup by Nicolo Melli tied it at 65-65 after 30 minutes. Koponen and Williams each buried one from beyond the arc for a 68-71 Bayern edge with seven minutes left. Vesely tried to change things for Fenerbahce and Datome struck from downtown for a 77-76 score. A jumper by Jovic turned the game into a thriller, 81-80, in the next-to-last minute. Guduric buried a triple and a dunk by Vesely sealed the outcome.

Pivotal performer

Vesely came off the bench to dominate the game, finishing it with 16 points on 8-of-12 two-point shooting, 5 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal, good for a performance index ranking of 22.

Game-changing moment

Bayern got within 81-80 with less than two minutes remaining, but Guduric stepped up with a critical three-pointer, which Vesely followed with a big, two-handed slam that allowed Fenerbahce to celebrate yet another win.

Stellar stat

Fenerbahce took better care of the ball, finishing the game with 23 assists and just 9 turnovers. On the other hand, Bayern had 16 points and 15 turnovers, which made the difference in this balanced game.

Did you notice?

Bayern finished the game with more offensive than defensive rebounds. Bayern pulled down 19 offensive boards and just 14 on the defensive end. It was one rebound shy from tying the club's record - Bayern pulled down 20 offensive rebounds against Partizan NIS Belgrade on January 9, 2014.

Next game

Both teams return to EuroLeague action next week. Bayern hosts Darussafaka Tekfen Istanbul on Thursday, November 8 at 20:00 CET. It is a rematch of last season's EuroCup Semifinals. On Friday, November 9 at 20:30 CET, Fenerbahce visits KIROLBET Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz. It is a rematch of their 2016 EuroLeague semifinals.

"This is a EuroLeague game. If somebody expects that any game over here will be easy, this is the wrong way. I am very proud of my team and I believe it was a very good game, and we beat an excellent opponent. This is what I believe - then, if someone believes it was not a good day, it is your opinion, what I can do? Rebounding is a part of the game and it was a problem. In the fourth quarter, they had like 9 offensive rebounds, and it is a matter of everybody to go and help on rebounds, not just the big guys. On the other hand, this happens sometimes because of the way we play defense, which is logical. It is also logical that we had 10 steals, the players who came off the bench helped the team a lot. I don't like to talk so much about one player, but I believe he helped the team a lot and changed the game - Sinan Guler. We need this, everybody's contribution off the bench, and we will be absolutely different."
RADONJIC, DEJAN
FC Bayern Munich
"First of all, congratulations to Fenerbahce and Zeljko [Obradovic] for the win. In the first half, I can say we played very good on offense. We allowed a lot of points, 51, and had to play better defense. In the second half, we played much, much better defense, but in the last few minutes, we made some bad decisions on offense. They used that to score important points that made them win the game."

"I think that you don't have to make a win complicated. We play in the EuroLeague, at a very high level, Bayern is a very good team and plays very good basketball. I think that it was crucial to step up our intensity in the last minutes. Everybody fought more and made the defensive plays that won the game."
BOOKER, DEVIN
FC Bayern Munich
"It wasn’t enough. We could have played better defense. We scored enough points, but it’s all about the defense. We will learn from this game.“
