Vesely, Datome lead Fenerbahce past Bayern
Fenerbahce Istanbul survived a tough test by downing FC Bayern Munich 88-84 at home on Thursday. Fenerbahce improved to 4-1, while Bayern dropped to 2-3. Luigi Datome led five Fenerbahce scorers in double digits with 19 points on 4-of-5 three-point shooting. Jan Vesely added 16 points, Nikola Kalinic had 11, Marko Guduric and Joffrey Lauvergne each scored 10 while Kostas Sloukas dished 10 assists for Fenerbahce. Devin Booker led Bayern with 15 points. Vladimir Lucic added 13, Stefan Jovic 12 and Petteri Koponen 11.
Kalinic and Lauvergne shined early and free throws by Datome gave Fenerbahce an 11-7 lead. Lucic stepped up for Bayern and a dunk by Booker gave Bayern its first lead, 13-14. Three-pointers by Booker and Nemanja Dangubic soon boosted the visitors' lead to 21-24. Ahmet Duverioglu dunked and Sloukas followed a triple with free throws for a 28-26 Fenerbahce lead after 10 minutes. A three-pointer by Jovic tied the game again, 33-33, early in the second quarter. Vesely kept pushing Fenerbahce while Ali Muhammed and Datome each struck from downtown to give Fenerbahce a 43-37 lead. Dangubic and Koponen brought Bayern within 49-48 at halftime. Booker took over after the break and Danilo Barthel followed a three-pointer with a huge dunk to cause the hosts to stop the game at 56-59. Duverioglu rescued Fenerbahce and a layup by Nicolo Melli tied it at 65-65 after 30 minutes. Koponen and Williams each buried one from beyond the arc for a 68-71 Bayern edge with seven minutes left. Vesely tried to change things for Fenerbahce and Datome struck from downtown for a 77-76 score. A jumper by Jovic turned the game into a thriller, 81-80, in the next-to-last minute. Guduric buried a triple and a dunk by Vesely sealed the outcome.
Pivotal performer
Vesely came off the bench to dominate the game, finishing it with 16 points on 8-of-12 two-point shooting, 5 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal, good for a performance index ranking of 22.
Game-changing moment
Bayern got within 81-80 with less than two minutes remaining, but Guduric stepped up with a critical three-pointer, which Vesely followed with a big, two-handed slam that allowed Fenerbahce to celebrate yet another win.
Stellar stat
Fenerbahce took better care of the ball, finishing the game with 23 assists and just 9 turnovers. On the other hand, Bayern had 16 points and 15 turnovers, which made the difference in this balanced game.
Did you notice?
Bayern finished the game with more offensive than defensive rebounds. Bayern pulled down 19 offensive boards and just 14 on the defensive end. It was one rebound shy from tying the club's record - Bayern pulled down 20 offensive rebounds against Partizan NIS Belgrade on January 9, 2014.
