Valencia dominates en route to fourth Eurocup finals appearance

Bojan Dubljevic - Valencia Basket - EC13 (photo Nizhny Novgorod)Valencia Basket dominated host Nizhny Novgorod on Wednesday night at Trade Union Sports Palace to win the game 53-79 and the series by an aggregate score of 128-163. The result sends Valencia to the Eurocup title series for a record fourth time, where it will face Unics Kazan. Valencia brought a 9-point edge from Game 1 into the return leg and used a 0-9 first-quarter run to assert control. Coach Velimir Perasovic’s men increased the lead to 25-39 (100-123) at halftime and erased any doubts with a 0-16 run that bridged the third and fourth quarters to cruise to an impressive victory. Bojan Dubljevic led the Valencia attack with 13 points and 6 rebounds, Romain Sato added 11 and 8 and Sam Van Rossom and Rafa Martinez netted 10 points apiece. Valencia made 11 of 20 three-point shots (55%) with eight different players connecting from downtown. Nizhny made just 3 of 20 three-point tries (15%). Pavel Korobkov and Semen Antonov led Nizhny with 9 points each in defeat.

Vadim Panin converted inside for the hosts on their first possession, but Pau Ribas countered for Valencia from downtown. The teams traded scores for the next several minutes, with Primoz Brezec for Kazan and Dubljevic for Valencia each scoring twice. The visitors broke the trend when Ribas followed a Van Rossom layup with a triple to make it 10-14 (85-99 on aggregate). Dubljevic added to the run with a hook shot before a Sato jumper capped a 0-9 run, which resulted in a Kazan timeout. Evgeny Paburin ended the Nizhny drought with a jumper and Dijon Thompson added a tip-in. After a Valencia timeout, Justin Doellman found Dubljevic open underneath and Oliver Lafayette’s fastbreak layup ended the quarter at 14-22 (89-106). Sato nailed a three to give his team a 20-point aggregate advantage. Despite a bucket from Prezec, Valencia continued to roll as Martinez scored 5 straight points. Pablo Aguilar shined at both ends with a steal and slam followed by a block of Brezec. His three from the corner two minutes later silenced the arena at 18-37 (93-121). Dublejevic reached 10 personal points before Antonov ended a four-minute scoring drought for Nizhny with free throws. Thompson added free throws and Dimitriy Khvostov fired in a three as the hosts showed signs of life in closing the gap to 25-39 (100-123) at halftime.

Korobkov free throws and a Khvostov three showed that Nizhny was ready to fight to the finish, but points from Sato and Van Rossom kept Valencia comfortable ahead. A Korobkov three made it 35-48 (110-132) midway through the third quarter. Despite a pair of buckets from Korobkov, Valencia got a pair of threes from Lafayette and another from Van Rossom in extending its lead to 23 in the game and 32 in the series. Free throws from Dubljevic and Aguilar ended the third quarter with Valencia riding an open 0-14 run for a 39-66 (114-150) lead. Vladimir Lucic threw down a monster slam early in the fourth quarter as Valencia was able to celebrate long before the final buzzer. Antonov remained active for the hosts, but there was little he could do as Valencia cruised to an impressive victory.
