Union Olimpija of Ljubljana has registered its third consecutive victory in suprisingly easy fashion, 87-66 over visiting Zalgiris, to remain co-leader of Group B with Kinder Bologna.

Union Olimpija began the game with a starting five that focussed on defense and left Zalgiris shocked. That's why coach Algirdas Brazys called the first time out only four minutes into the first quarter with 11-4 on the scoreboard. Brazys's advice didn't help much since Zalgiris didn't give signs of setting itself free from the oppressive defense of Olimpija. Zalgiris ended the first period having scored only 14 points (29-14). With a totally inspired Haris Mujezinovic (he had hit 12 points when the score was 20-8) and also with great percentages by his mates (10-for-11 field goals overall, 2-of-3 threes) the team from Ljubljana was 16 points ahead in minute 12 (33-17) which meant that home coach Zmago Sagadin started with the first changes. His counterpart, Brazys, had tried earlier but not even Kestutis Marciulionis nor Donatas Slanina nor Andrius Jurkunas could change the direction of the game which clearly headed for the home team (39-19 in minute 15).

Just the opposite as Zalgiris, every player that hit the court for Olimpija had a good performance tonight. Captain Jure Zdovc hit a three right after coming off the bench after a month out due to injury. Beno Udrih was a perfect subsitute for Illievski just as Jurica Golemac and Jasmin Hukic didn't have any problems with the minor injuries that bugged them throughout the week.

Zalgiris was able to cut down the lead only twice throughout the game. In minute 19 it came back to a 12-point deficit (41-29) but at half time, Olimpija had built it back to 16 points. The second time it was right at the beginning of the third quarter, when with the first offensive play, Zalgiris put 46-33 on the scoreboard, but Olimpija pulled away 54-33 with no effort. A 68-45 lead in minute 28 broke the game open and the team from Ljubljana just cruised to its third win in this Euroleague.

Head Coaches

SAGADIN, ZMAGOSLAV
Union Olimpija
"Even though the result may make people think it was an easy game for us, it wasn't. We suffered a lot and we worked hard to earn this win. As I said before the game, the game was decided on defense. We had a good beginning and that prevented us from the lethal shooting of Zalgiris. When we opened the gap on the scoreboard, things were easier for us, but the game was not sealed yet. We had everything under control at all times and in the end we made it. It was a great team work, and this win puts us to the top of the group, which means that we'll have to work even more to remain where we are now."
BRAZYS, ALGIRDAS
Zalgiris
"The only thing I can do is to congratulate Olimpija for they were a better team tonight. We had a terrible beginning which sank us down and my players weren't able to score. I hope that our next game against Frankfurt will be better for us and that we'll have Arvydas Sabonis and Tomas Masiulis available. We'll be a different team."

Players

ZDOVC, JURE
Union Olimpija
"We did our job the way we had planned. A very aggressive defense at the beginning worked perfectly and the second issue was to stop their deep shooting, which also worked out perfectly. The third point was the offense which I'm very proud of. Sagadin's philosophy was there: If your defense is good, a good offense will come with it. I hope our winning streak continues in Istanbul."
KHIZHNIAK, GRYGORII
Zalgiris
"This is what Zalgiris practices at every training session. They caught us by surprise at the beginning with such an aggressive defense but I swear that Olimpija won't have things as easy as today when they come to play in Kaunas."
