BC Khimki Moscow Region held on to beat VEF Riga 64-72 in the teams’ opening game at the Nike International Junior Tournament classification event in Kaunas, Lithuania. Oleg Alferov free throws with 46 seconds remaining in regulation tied the game at 60-60 and neither team scored in its remaining possession, which set up the extra session. After Kristaps Plavnieks put Riga ahead with the first basket of overtime, Alferov drilled a triple to start a 0-10 run in which Serdar Annaev scored 5 points to put the game away. Stanislav Ilnitskiy produced 24 points, 11 rebounds and 4 assists and Rotislav Karenin had 21 points and 12 rebounds to lead Khimki. Alferov added 10 points and Annaev had 7 assists and 4 steals for the winners. Kristaps Gluditis scored 14 points, Plavnieks and Davis Geks added 11 each and Ivars Zvigurs tallied 10 points and 10 boards in defeat. Khumki dominated early on and led 27-41 at halftime, but Riga stormed back in the third quarter to set up a thrilling finish that featured three ties and three lead changes in the fourth quarter.
