Bonn gets a road win in Milic's special night

Telekom Baskets Bonn grabbed its first road win in Group A by downing Union Olimpija Ljubljana 77-82 in the Slovenian capital on Wednesday. Bonn improved to 2-1 in Group A while Olimpija dropped to 1-2. Olimpija retired Marko Milic's #12 number in a brief ceremony before the game. Milic played for Olimpija for eight seasons in four stints, helping the club reach the 1997 Euroleague Final Four. Aaron White led the winners with 20 points and 7 rebounds. Eugene Lawrence and Tadas Klimavicius each added 12 points while Rotnei Clarke had 11 for Bonn. Lawrence also dished 11 assists for a double-double. Zach Wright led Olimpija with 16 points. Luka Rupnik added 14, Sava Lesic had 12 while Blaz Mahkovic got 10 for the hosts. Bonn used a 0-15 run to get a double-digit lead, 13-24, after 10 minutes and extended it to 38-53 soon after halftime. A 12-0 run which Rupnik capped with a three-pointer got Olimpija within 50-53 but Lawrence, Koch and White stepped up to give Bonn a 51-63 margin at the end of the third quarter. Nothing changed from that moment, as Bonn held off Olimpija's wild comeback down the stretch.

Rupnik got Olimpija going with a three-point shots from the top of the key which Lawrence erased with another bomb from downtown. Ronalds Zakis and Isaiah Philmore exchanged baskets and free throws by Lawrence gave Bonn its first lead, 5-7. Zakis kept pacing Olimpija with a put-back layup but Dirk Madrich and Jimmy McKinney struck from downtown to make Olimpija call timeout at 7-14. Clarke hit a five-meter jumper which White followed with a driving layup for a 7-18 Bonn margin. Xavier Silas made 4-of-4 free throws to cap a 0-15 run, as Olimpija missed 8 consecutive shots until Wright got the hosts within 11-22. White dunked and a tip-in by Lesic fixed the score at 13-24 after 10 minutes. White swished a three-pointer early in the second quarter. Zakis hit a jump hook and a triple by Wright gave Olimpija hope at 17-27. White dunked again, Miha Lapornik downed a corner three-pointer and Andrej Mangold restored a 21-31 Bonn lead. Madrich shined with a layup-plus-foul, Wright scored again and Mahkovic hit 6-of-6 free throws to get the hosts a closer, 29-34, after a 9-0 run. Madrich and Clarke struck from downtown and Philmore added foul shots to keep Bonn way ahead, 31-42, at halftime.

White split free throws right after the break and Klimavicius added a layup for a 31-45 Bonn lead. Lesic scored down low, White sank foul shots and another layup by Klimavicius boosted the guests' lead to 33-49. Wright shined with a driving layup and Lesic added a three-point play but White and Klimavicius kept the guests way ahead, 38-53. Blaz Mesicek made free throws and got help from Lesic and Gregor Hrovat in a 12-0 run which Rupnik capped with a big triple for a 50-53 Olimpija deficit. Clarke and Lawrence answered from downtown and a huge dunk by Koch gave Bonn fresh air at 51-61. A tip-in by White improved his team's margin to 51-63 after 30 minutes. Wright split foul shots early in the fourth quarter and Lapornik hit a triple but Klimavicius and Lawrence answered for a 56-69 Bonn lead with 7 minutes to go. Mahkovic took over with an off-balance layup but he didn't find much help around. Meanwhile, a dunk by Klimavicius sealed the outcome, 58-71, with over 4 minutes left. Rupnik brought Olimpija within 74-78 already in the final minute but it was too little, too late for the hosts.

“Congratulations to Telekom Baskets Bonn for deserved victory. They were a better opponent. I am not happy with what we showed today, because we did not develop our game as we wanted. It seemed that we were sleepy and not in the mood. Simply, we did not execute plays as we wanted, we were very imprecise. We did not set the screens on offense like we wanted, so we did not execute the plays like we wanted. Then your shooting percentages drops, because simply, you are not in the right position. We did not find our rhythm, and also we did not stop the opponent on defense like we wanted. They did not have a great shooting percentage, but they really moved the ball well. Simply, they were too fast for us. They also found a solution for all our defenses. We changed three defenses during the game and nothing worked. I am sure my players wanted to win and they were fighting to win it, they gave it their all, I am sure, even if sometimes it did look like it. I am very sorry for the loss and what we showed today, because our crowd came in a nice number and I know that we should have played better.”

“I am happy that we won the game. We played good basketball for two quarters, we moved the ball really well. I have to give praise also to the young Union Olimpija team, that did not give up until the end. When you are up by 10 or 15 points, then your concentration drops a little, they scored a few three-pointers and came really close. When we were up by only 3 points, I had a feeling that we were scared a little, because we were in really dangerous situation. It is good that we won, and we are already looking forward to the next game.”
