DKV Joventut improved to 2-1 in Group D by thrashing Besiktas Cola Turka 73-86 in Istanbul, Turkey on Tuesday night. Joventut registered its second consecutive road win and hosts 2 of its 3 remaining regular season games. Meanwhile, Besiktas dropped to 1-2 and must beat Joventut in Badalona next week to rejoin the Last 16 race. Clay Tucker led the winners with 21 points on 5-of-8 three-pointers. Luka Bogdanovic added 16 while Antonio Bueno and Edu Hernandez-Sonseca each had 15 for Joventut. Mire Chatman led Besiktas with 20 points. Kevin Fletcher added 12 while Engin Atsur and Cehver Ozer each had 10 for the hosts. Tucker had 8 points in a 2-18 run that allowed Joventut to get the lead for good, 9-26, late in the first quarter. Bogdanovic and Tucker shined in the second quarter to boost the guests' lead to 32-50 at halftime. A power layup by Pere Tomas gave Joventut its biggest lead, 35-60, midway through the third quarter. Chatman and Fletcher managed to bring Besiktas within 61-73 but Tucker and Bogdanovic stepped up to seal the outcome long before the final buzzer.
Bueno got Joventut going with a mid-range jumper and a layup off a steal by Mario Fernandez gave his team a 0-4 edge. Chatman downed a three-pointer, as Joventut tried to slow down the game tempo. Ozer sank a jumper to give Besiktas its first lead, 5-4. Koffi and Bueno stepped up with consecutive baskets but Lonny Baxter beat the shot clock to keep Besiktas within 7-8. Bueno stayed on fire with a three-point play, igniting a 2-18 run in which Tucker nailed consecutive running triples. A three-point play by Hernandez-Sonseca and free throws by Tucker broke the game open, 9-26. Fletcher rescued Besiktas with a jumper while Chatman scored in transition and fed Kerem Ozkan for a dunk to get the hosts within 15-26 after 10 minutes. Kris Valters shined with a driving layup early in the second quarter and Bogdanovic added a three-pointer to boost the guests' margin to 16-31. Ozkan and Baxter tried to change things with 5 quick points but Bogdanovic kept Joventut way ahead, 21-33. Hernandez-Sonseca scored twice down low and Tucker buried his third triple to make it an 18-point game, 22-40. Tucker struck again from downtown and Henk Norel added a jump hook for a 26-45 Joventut lead. Ozer and Chatman tried to ignite the hosts' comeback but another three-pointer by Bogdanovic fixed the halftime score at 32-50.
Bueno dunked it immediately after the break, as Besiktas struggled to score for more than 3 minutes. Bogdanovic sank free throws and Fernandez added a fast break layup to make it a 24-point game, 32-56. Bueno sank a four-meter jumper and a power layup by Tomas boosted the guests' margin to 35-60 midway through the third quarter. Engin Atsur tried to change things with a triple and Fletcher added a layup but Joventut kept full control of the game. Hernandez-Sonseca scored inside but Muratcan Guler and Fletcher made Joventut call timeout at 44-62. Hernandez-Sonseca followed a jumper with a dunk while three-pointers by Atsur and Bogdanovic fixed the score at 49-71 after 30 minutes. Chatman scored in penetration and Atsur added free throws for a 53-71 deficit early in the fourth quarter. Joventut had opted to use long possessions to run the game clock down. Chatman scored again but a layup off a steal by Fernandez gave Joventut some fresh air, 55-73, with 7 minutes left. It didn't last long, however, as a big dunk by Ozcan ignited a 6-0 run that made Joventut call timeout at 61-73. Bueno scored inside and three-pointers by Bogdanovic and Tucker sealed the outcome, 64-81, with 4 minutes left. Everything was said and done already as even when Besiktas kept trying, Joventut had already cruised to a well-deserved road win.
