Madrid rolls past Ulm to win opener

U18 Real Madrid rolled to an 89-74 victory over U18 ratiopharm Ulm to start its quest to defend its title at the Euroleague Basketball Adidas Next Generation Tournament Munich. Usman Garuba paced five Madrid players in double figures with 20 points to go with 7 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 blocks in the Group B game. Mario Nakic and Ziga Samar both scored 14 points, Kareem Queeley had 10 points and Amar Sylla added 10 points, 11 rebounds and 2 blocks for the 2015 continental champion. Aleksa Bulajic scored 18 points for Ulm and Andrija Grbovic added 14 points in defeat.

Madrid stormed ahead 8-0 before Grbovic hit a three-pointer for Ulm’s first points. Adam Krasovec added a three-ball of his own and Ulm was down 10-6. Queeley picked up 7 points as Madrid reeled off a 13-3 run to go up 23-9 and the lead was 27-15 after 10 minutes. It was 33-20 when Garuba scored 7 points to spark a 15-0 surge to lead 48-20. At halftime it was 55-28. Grbovic nailed two more treys and Ulm trailed 57-36. Madrid did enough to keep Ulm well out of reach and triples from Simar and Nakic increased the gap to 71-41. And Madrid was leading 75-47 after 30 minutes. Ulm wanted to use the experience of playing against the stronger Madrid and refused to give up, putting together a 2-10 run to start the fourth quarter and make it 77-57. And Ulm reeled off another 0-10 spurt in the final minutes to make the final score more respectable.
