Partizan holds off Lokomotiv to remain undefeated

Partizan NIS Belgrade took control in the fourth quarter and made a real statement down the stretch to beat former champion Lokomotiv Kuban Krasnodar 80-71 and improve to 4-0 in the 7DAYS EuroCup this season. Lokomotiv fell to 2-2, but should have no shame in losing to a fired-up home side like Partizan after a tense and entertaining affair. Partizan built a healthy lead, but Lokomotiv refused to lie down and came back at the hosts as halftime approached. After falling behind by 6, Partizan summoned inspiration from its fans and went on a 7-0 run to retake the lead in a wild third quarter. Rashawn Thomas led the winners by scoring 14 of his 16 points in the fourth quarter, while William Mosley posted 11 points, 9 rebounds and 3 blocks and Rade Zagorac and Ognjen Jaramaz scored 10 each. For the visitors, Will Cummings and Sam Dekker had 17 apiece and Alan Williams posted a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds.

It was a lively opening 10 minutes with both sides trading baskets early before Partizan opened up a 5-point lead thanks to an Ognjen Jaramez three. Lokomotiv wasn’t going anywhere and while the visitors kept it close, Partizan opened up a lead of 24-18 after one quarter. Partizan extended the lead again to 26-18 with a Stefan Bircevic basket early in the second. The home side was starting to separate from the visitors. Bircevic gave Partizan its biggest lead of the night with a three to make it 31-21. Back-to-back triples gave Lokomotiv a chance late in the half with the score at 39-34. The half ended 41-35. Lokomotiv got off to a quicker start and trailed 43-41 early in the third. It eventually overturned the deficit with a Dekker basket after trailing since the second minute. Partizan was struggling and Lokomotiv led 50-56 at one stage in that third quarter, but the home side turned that back on its head at 57-56 with a Marcus Paige triple on its way back into the lead. In the true spirit of this game, Lokomotiv regained the lead at 57-58 at the end of that third quarter. There were a couple of lead changes early in the fourth before a Jaramaz basket ade it 62-60. Thomas extended the home side’s lead to 66-61 with 7 minutes left. Partizan was back in business after a wobble in the third. Lokomotiv got its second wind with a wIll Cummings three-point play that left the score at 70-67 midway through that final quarter, however, Partizan was in no mood for a tense ending though as Thomas took over and they finished strong to win 80-71.

Pivotal performer

Rashawn Thomas had 2 points in the opening three quarters. In the final 10 minutes, he scored 14. With Lokomotiv poking and prodding for Partizan’s weaknesses, Thomas came up time and again in the clutch to see his side win on the night.

Stat of the game

Partizan got it done on both ends of the floor and gave Lokomotiv nothing around the basket. Its 9 blocks were almost double the team's previous record of 5 in a EuroCup game. The 9 blocks were also good enough for ninth on the all-time on the EuroCup record chart.

Did you notice?

Thirty-five of Partizan’s 80 points came off the bench. The hosts also had 10 of their 22 assists from the bench and of their 9 steals, 4 of them were from substitutes also.

Next game

Partizan puts its 4-0 record on the line against Limoges CSP on Wednesday, October 30. Lokomotiv welcomes Tofas Bursa to Basket Hall in Krasnodar on that same night.

"I feel that the first thing I have to do tonight is congratulate my players. They were able to play at the end looking to end a great game. We played with the fans, an energetic game. We had a bad third quarter, but their talent is big and in the first half we were great for 16 or 17 minutes and then we made a couple of mistakes. Cummings scored a really tough three-point shot and then the momentum changed. They came out of the locker room in the third quarter very tough and we were not good. We were trying to find the rhythm. We left the best until the end, our perfect effort. Not the perfect game but the perfect effort."

"Congratulations to Partizan for the win, for the game they played and for the atmosphere they created around the game. From our point, no matter about the absences, we were ready to play a tough game, to compete and to match their energy and athleticism. Unfortunately, our approach to the game wasn’t as good as we expected. Too many turnovers to set the tone of the game, but from the end of the second period, I saw the team respond differently, finally adjusting against this type of aggressiveness. To tell you the truth, most of what we did in the second half, it gave us the feeling that we can play until the end. Unfortunately, when we were close to finishing our job in the last three minutes, they were able to keep their level of energy and again we came back to previous mistakes with some turnovers, some blocks and we were not able to score, I believe, in the last 3 minutes."

"I feel great, I'm so proud of my team. We fought so hard, we overcame a lot of adversity whether it be us not playing to our full potential or the foul count and us fouling a lot, but we overcame that and showed how special our team is. I feel like I didn’t really play that well, but the team kept me motivated, Coach kept me motivated and I contributed in the fourth quarter and it helped us win. That energy [from the fans] is so exhilarating. The hairs on the back of your neck are raised when you’re out there and you hear that."
