Birthday boy Lavrinovic leads Lietkabelis to Istanbul win

Lietkabelis Panevezys picked up a tough, come-from-behind road win at Galatasaray Odeabank Istanbul, 73-78, on Wednesday at Sinan Erdem Dome. Darjus Lavrinovic scored 18 points in 17 minutes on his birthday and Zanis Peiners shined with 16 points and 4 steals for the winners. Galatasaray dominated early and led 25-10 in the first quarter and 43-32 at halftime. However Darjus Lavrinovic led a third-quarter comeback and Gary Talton scored 9 of his 10 points in the fourth as Lietkabelis pulled away for a victory that takes its record to 2-2. Vaidas Cepukaitis added 12 rebounds and 4 blocks for the winners. DaJuan Summers made his first 6 three-pointers and finished with 20 points for Galatasaray. Scotty Hopson added 14 points and Richard Hendrix had 12 as their team fell to 0-4.

Cepukaitis’s hot hand gave the visitors an early edge, but Galatasaray roared back as Summers and Hopson each hit threes in an 8-0 spurt. Ksistof Lavrinovic hit from downtown for Lietkabelis only to see Summers sandwich a pair of triples around another from Alex Renfroe for a 20-8 advantage. Summers added yet another three as the hosts cruised to a 25-10 lead. Free throws by Darjus Lavrinovic and Gary Talton made it 25-13 after 10 minutes. Darjus Lavrinovic scored the first 5 points of the second quarter to trim the Lietkabelis deficit. Gintaras Leonavicius also struck from behind the arc to draw the visitors within 27-23. However Galatasaray regrouped and the lead stood at double digits again after Goksenin Koksal drained a three. Then Summers made his fifth to help Galatasaray reach halftime with a 43-32 lead.

Summers scored his first two-point shot early in the third quarter, but Lietkabelis was not intimidated and drew within 47-44 on a Darjus Lavrinovic three. The visitors continued their push and Peiners made it 54-53. T.J. Cline gave Galatasaray some breathing room when he netted a triple and the hosts kept a 61-58 edge at the end of the third quarter. Lietkabelis completed its comeback when Gary Talton tied it at 63-63 with a second-chance three. Talton gave the visitors their first lead since the opening minutes with a scoop shot, but Summers countered with his sixth three. Then Talton scored in the paint and set up Painers for a three and a 68-72 lead with two minutes to go. After Cepukaitis rejected Hendrix inside, a Simas Jasaitis three and Talton layup all but secured the outcome.

“We are making the same mistakes over and over again. There is nothing for us but to work harder. But we have to admit that the chances for us to qualify to the next round in EuroCup is now rather small.”
STALBERGS, ARTURS
Lietkabelis Panevezys
"Happy birthday to the brothers Lavrinovic. This was a good gift for them. Regarding the game, it took us some time to get started. I don’t know for what reasons. Maybe the long travel or some other reasons, but we should not focus on that. I told my players we have to focus, we have to be aggressive. The first 10 minutes was kind of a disaster for us, but eventually we showed great defense, aggressive defense. We started to play aggressive offensively and came up with this very important road win. "
