Barcelona edges Zalgiris in a thriller

In a high-scoring showdown that went down to the final seconds, FC Barcelona Lassa grabbed its third consecutive win by downing Zalgiris Kaunas 92-86 at Palau Blaugrana on Thursday. Barcelona improved to 4-2, while Zalgiris dropped to 1-5. Tyrese Rice led the winners with 20 points of which 18 came in the second half. Petteri Koponen added 16, Sasha Vezenkov 12, Marcus Eriksson scored a EuroLeague career-high 11 points, Ante Tomic contributed 10 and Joey Dorsey posted 9 points, 10 rebounds and 2 blocks for Barcelona. Brock Motum led Zalgiris with a EuroLeague career-high 26 points on 7-of-7 two-point shooting and 4-of-5 on three-pointers. Paulius Jankunas added 12 points, Antanas Kavaliauskas had 10 while Augusto Lima posted 7 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists. Barcelona made 25 of 29 free throws (86.2%) and committed just 8 turnovers in compiling a team performance index rating of 121.

Tomic got Barcelona going, following a layup with a mid-range jumper in a 6-0 opening run. Kavaliauskas stepped up with back-to-back layups, but Tomic and Rice kept the hosts way ahead, 9-4. Renaldas Seibutis and Jankunas nailed consecutive jumpers, but Eriksson struck from downtown and got help from Dorsey and Vezenkov to keep Barcelona ahead, 16-12, after 10 minutes. Vezenkov buried a corner triple early in the second quarter, but Lima and Arturas Milaknis kept Zalgiris within 19-16. Koponen hit a floater and Dorsey added a put-back layup, but Zalgiris found a go-to guy in Jankunas, who kept his team within 28-26. Motum took over with 7 quick points and free throws by Leo Westermann gave Zalgiris its first lead, 33-35. A three-pointer by Brad Oleson fixed the halftime score at 36-35. A layup by Lima put Zalgiris back ahead, 39-40, soon after the break. Rice and an outstanding Eriksson rescued Barcelona, making the guests call timeout at 48-45. Lima scored again and a three-pointer by Kevin Pangos provided another lead change, 48-50. Eriksson and Tomic fueled a 7-0 run that gave the hosts a 55-52 edge. Rice stepped up for Barcelona once Zalgiris entered the foul penalty, an acrobatic alley-oop layup by Oleson and a three-point play by Tomic gave the hosts fresh air, 65-56, before Lekavicius beat the third quarter buzzer with a midcourt shot. Rice and Koponen kept Barcelona way ahead, 71-64, early in the fourth quarter. Dorsey scored down low to make it a double-digit game, 78-68, with less than six minutes left. Motum tried to change things with back-to-back triples and a backdoor layup that made it a three-point game, 80-77. Vezenkov and Rice stepped up in crunch time for an 86-79 lead in the next-to-last minute, but Edgaras Ulanovas and Kavaliauskas still brought Zalgiris back in the game, 88-86. Rice and Dorsey hit free throws to seal the outcome down the stretch.

"It was a very important win for us. First of all, because Zalgiris played excellent; even if they were down by 10 points, then found a way to return to the game, with a long buzzer-beater at the end of the third quarter and some crazy shots. They played with desire and motivation and didn't have pressure, that's why I think they scored like this. We had the pressure, it is true and should have won the game one way or another. It was difficult to play with the same motivation after the wins against Maccabi and Madrid. We also lost Perperoglou in the first half; he couldn't play. We played with six players - Brad Oleson played excellent, doing exactly what the team needed today. We have to be happy with this win. At this time, all EuroLeague games are tight. Our EuroLeague record is 4-2, which is not bad at all, and we got three wins in a row without half of the team. I am really happy that some players stepped up. Sasha Vezenkov, for example, Marcus Eriksson and Stefan Peno. We are struggling right now, but big wins like today's, Maccabi or Bamberg made us become mentally stronger. With a deeper roster, everything will be easier for us."

"We definitely knew that it was going to be a tough game. Zalgiris plays hard in any situation and any day. They have a coach that demands them to give everything they have. They respect him, obviously, and show it on the court. I think we came out flat in the beginning of the game and they took advantage on a lot of things. They scored 86 points in our home court. We are maybe one of the best two defensive teams in the EuroLeague all year, and maybe in all of Europe all year. To give up 86 points is not really acceptable. They are an aggressive team and I tried to put myself in situations to draw some fouls, get to the line, maybe get some easy baskets because it wasn't easy to score. We scored 92 points, but it was still difficult, they were still very physical out there. That is what we expected."
ERIKSSON, MARCUS

"All EuroLeague games are difficult, but we won and did a good job. Zalgiris kept close throughout the game, but in the end, small details decided the game. They never took the lead in the final minutes and we won in the end, which is what matters."
DORSEY, JOEY
FC Barcelona Lassa
"Our feelings before this game were very high because we just beat Madrid [in the Spanish League] and Coach wanted us to be very level-headed, knowing that Zalgiris is a team that has heart and is going to keep fighting and is never going to go away. And that is how it was in the first half, a close game. We came into the locker room and discussed things about defense and pick-and-roll. Once I got out there and played with the other four guys, we switched everything. We had no worries because if the guard gets to the basket, I can block the shot. They didn't go away and fought the whole night."

"Another game where we were in it till the very end. I don’t know what to till you. There were some fouls we didn’t make at some times, but we need to finish these games. We were in it till the very end, we just need to make some plays at key times and hopefully we can start winning these games. We played good, but we didn’t win. The effort and the energy is there; you can’t teach that stuff. But there are little mistakes we made at key times in the game I guess that’s the difference in close games like this. "
