Clyburn leads CSKA past Olympiacos, 88-82

CSKA Moscow registered its fourth consecutive victory by downing Olympiacos Piraeus 88-82 in the Russian capital on Friday. CSKA's record improved to 4-1 while Olympiacos dropped to 3-2. Will Clyburn paced the winners with 29 points. Iffe Lundberg and Joel Bolomboy each added 16 while Nikita Kurbanov and Alexey Shved had 10 apiece for CSKA. Tony Dorsey led Olympiacos with 32 points while Livio Jean-Charles added 11. Dorsey struck three times from beyond the arc in an opening 4-15 run for the visitors. Kurbanov and Bolomboy fueled a 13-0 run that Daniel Hackett capped with a triple to put CSKA ahead for the first time, 28-25, early in the second quarter. Clyburn and Lundberg helped the hosts boost their margin to 48-38 at halftime. Clyburn stayed on fire and Kurbanov made it a 17-point game, 66-49, late in the third quarter. Dorsey and Jean-Charles sparked a 0-14 run that brought Olympiacos as close as 66-63 in the fourth, but Lundberg, Bolomboy and Clyburn joined forces to restore a 78-66 CSKA lead, allowing the Russian powerhouse to seal the outcome.

Moustapha Fall and Sasha Vezenkov each scored down low in a 0-7 opening run that Dorsey capped with a triple. Thomas Walkup added a layup and a red hot Dorsey buried consecutive three-pointers to boost Olympiacos's margin to 4-15. Shved stepped up with a driving layup that Kostas Papanikolaou bettered with a bomb from downtown. Shved and Lundberg fueled a 6-0 CSKA run that Bolomboy capped with a layup. Dorsey - who else? - hit another triple and followed Walkup's jumper with a driving layup but Kurbanov struck twice from deep and fed Bolomboy to keep CSKA within 20-25 after 10 minutes.

Bolomboy kept pacing CSKA early in the second quarter, bringing his team to within 23-25. Clyburn took over with a huge driving layup that Daniel Hackett followed with a triple that put CSKA in charge, 28-25, after a 13-0 run. Shaquielle McKissic scored in penetration but Shved did better with a long three-pointer. Georgios Printezis followed a jump hook with a layup but Bolomboy and Clyburn kept the hosts ahead, 35-33. Lundberg scored off a steal and Clyburn added a couple of three-point plays to boost CSKA's lead to 43-35. Lundberg followed a triple with a buzzer-beating layup for a double-digit CSKA lead, 48-38, at halftime.

Lundberg hit a jumper right after the break and Clyburn improved Papanikolaou's layup with a three-pointer, good for a 53-40 CSKA lead. Bolomboy scored down low but Dorsey and Fall kept Olympiacos within 56-44. Lundberg swished a jumper, Jean-Charles and Clyburn traded triples and Vezenkov scored in the paint at 61-47. Johannes Voigtmann joined the three-point shootout and with Kurbanov soon gave CSKA a 66-49 lead. Dorsey sank his fifth three-pointer, getting help from Jean-Charles and Walkup to bring Olympiacos back to life, 66-59, at the end of 30 minutes.

Dorsey sank a jumper and soon added a coast-to-coast layup that capped a 0-14 run and brought Olympiacos within striking distance, 66-63. Lundberg stepped up with a three-pointer and Shved gave CSKA plenty of fresh air, 72-65, with 7 minutes left. Clyburn sank a step-back three-pointer and Bolomboy copied him right after that to restore a 78-66 CSKA margin. Jean-Charles kept pacing Olympiacos with a put-back layup and Dorsey struck again from downtown but Clyburn took over with a wild three-point play for an 81-71 score with 4 minutes left. Dorsey and McKissic got Olympiacos closer, 84-77, but Clyburn made sure that CSKA sealed a big home victory.

Turning point: CSKA erased the Reds' early double-digit edge

Things did not start well for CSKA Moscow in its Round 5 game against Olympiacos Piraeus. In fact, Olympiacos needed just 3 minutes and 13 seconds to build a double-digit lead. Sasha Vezenkov and Moustapha Fall each scored down low, Tony Dorsey struck twice from downtown and Thomas Walkup also contributed to a 2-12 opening run. CSKA didn't panic, however, as even when Olympiacos still led 15-25 late in the first quarter, Joel Bolomboy and Will Clyburn fueled a 13-0 run that Daniel Hackett capped with a three-pointer to put the hosts ahead for good, 28-25. CSKA never trailed after that.

Pivotal performer: Clyburn delivered for CSKA

Will Clyburn was a difference-maker in CSKA Moscow's home victory against Olympiacos Piraeus. Clyburn was a steady force throughout the game, leading a 13-0 run that allowed CSKA to get the lead, pushing his team's margin to 17 points, and then rescuing the Russian powerhouse when it needed a go-to guy. He finished the game with a season-high 29 points, making 6 of 8 two-pointers, 3 of 8 shots threes and 8 of 8 free throws. He added 3 rebounds, 4 assists and 7 fouls drawn for a PIR of 32, his best mark so far this season. Clyburn has scored in double digits in all five CSKA games so far this season, too.

Dorsey matched Olympiacos record for threes

In just his fifth EuroLeague game in an Olympiacos Pireaus uniform, guard Tony Dorsey buried 7 three-point shots against CSKA Moscow on Friday to match a club record that has been standing for nearly two decades. Olympiacos legend Milan Tomic previously buried 7 three-point shots against Union Olimpija Ljubljana on February 27, 2003. Tomic, however, had 11 attempts in his game and Dorsey took 10 three-point tries against CSKA. Dorsey's 32 points are also the highest-scoring night by an Olympiacos player in almost seven years. Vassilis Spanoulis had a career-high 34 points against Neptunas Klaipeda on October 31, 2014.

"Hustle, hustle, hustle and hustle. We opened the game very bad, the first minutes. It was kind of like we were playing a friendly game. Even in friendly games, we don't play like that. We got loose and tried to catch the rhythm. We realized that we had to play more aggressive and more physical, and I have to congratulate the team from the bottom of my heart. Our team did a great, tremendous job and a tremendous effort. But as I said, again, the most important thing is those that are playing and those that are healthy, they have a tremendous wish. We were very composed at the moment that Olympiacos was leading plus-12 and had a very hot Dorsey today. We had to do a better job on him, he is a great scorer, and I think that strategically, down the stretch, we found ways to attack and spread their paint, get Fall a little bit out of the paint and make crucial shots. We did not manage to keep them below this 50% of their twos; they shot 70%. That's bad, but overall, our players are heroes tonight. It is another battle, another EuroLeague battle that brought it to the end with a good outcome."

"The key of the game tonight was that everybody was on the same page defensively, especially in the second and third quarter, for sure. We were all together, we were fighting and we just took advantage of the game plan that we had. I am glad we got the win. It was a tough game, a long game, and I am glad we got the win. Obviously, it is tough (to play without the three injured players); they are key guys on our team. We need them back and are going to continue to keep getting better. It is a good thing that we are fighting without them but I would love to have them back."

"We didn't start the game very well but I think that especially in the second quarter, we managed to flip it. We were down by 10 and ended the second quarter up by 10, and that is a 22-point swing, obviously. I think we were very composed throughout the whole game. Good teams are going to make runs like Olympiacos did throughout the fourth and in the late third, but we managed to keep our composure and ultimately win the game."
