Unics Kazan confirmed its status as the team to beat in Group F by downing Panionios BC Athens 72-92 in the Greek capital on Wednesday. Unics improved to 3-0 to stay atop the standings while Panionios dropped to 0-3. Chuck Eidson paced the winners with 22 points and 6 assists. Kostas Kaimakoglou added 17 points, Mire Chatman and Ian Vougioukas each added 13 while Terrell Lyday got 11 for Unics. Nikos Pappas led Panionios with 24 points. Marios Batis and Landon Milbourne each added 12 for the hosts. Eidson shined early in the game and got some help from Lyday and Kaimakoglou to make Unics get a 20-26 lead after 10 minutes. Vladimir Veremeenko and Vougioukas soon allowed Unics to boost its margin to 26-37 but Vladimir Jankovic and Pappas brought Panionios within 43-49 at the break. Eidson and Vougioukas shined after the break to boost the guests' lead to 45-63. Pappas led an 11-0 run to get Panionios within 62-71 but Kaimakoglou scored 12 points in crunch time to seal the outcome down the stretch.
Lyday got Unics going with a jumper and Eidson added a layup but Pappas and Batis quickly tied it at 4-4. Lyday and Pappas exchanged three-pointers and a layup-plus-foul by Eidson gave the guests a 7-10 margin. Kaimakoglou shined with a fast break layup and a jumper by Vougioukas boosted Unics' lead to 9-14. Pappas tried to change things for Panionios but Vougioukas and Eidson kept Unics ahead, 12-17. Pappas kept pacing Panionios and a layup by Georgios Bogris made it a one-point game, 16-17. Lyday fed Eidson for a dunk and scored down low but Jankovic and Strahinja Milosevic kept Panionios as close as 20-21. Free throws by Lyday and a buzzer-beating triple by Kaimakoglou gave Unics a 20-26 edge after 10 minutes. Eidson and Ashton Gibbs traded baskets early in the second quarter. Petr Samoylenko and Chatman soon gave Unics a double-digit edge, 22-32. Gibbs and Bogris stepped up for the hosts but Veremeenko singlehandedly allowed Unics to keep a 26-37 lead. Panionios kept going to the foul line often, as Gibbs and Jankovic fueled a 6-0 run that gave the hosts hope at 32-39. Veremeenko and Samoylenko hit free throws and a jumper by Igor Zamanskiy soon gave Unics a 36-47 margin. Jankovic hit free throws, Milbourne added a three-point play and Pappas brought Panionios within 43-49 at halftime.
Eidson buried consecutive three-pointers immediately after the break to boost the guests' lead to 43-55. Milbourne tried to ignite Panionios' comeback with a jumper but he didn't find any help around. Meanwhile, Vougioukas had 4 points in an 0-8 run that Veremeenko capped with a dunk to break the game open, 45-63. Chris Booker hit a jumper and Jankovic made free throws to get Panionios a bit closer, 49-63. Unics kept going to the foul line often and free throws by Lyday, Vougioukas and Veremeenko kept the guests out of trouble, 49-69. Pappas hit a jumper which Chatman erased at the other end. Pappas answered with 4 quick points that made Panionios get within 57-71 after 30 minutes. Bogris scored around the basket and a three-pointer by Pappas got the crowd involved, 62-71, after an 11-0 run. Unics found a go-to guy in Kaimakoglou, that followed a three-point play with back-to-back shots from beyond the arc that sealed the outcome, 65-80, with 7 minutes to go. Chatman scored again and a red hot Kaimakoglou struck again from downtown, allowing Unics to celebrate a big road win long before the final buzzer.
