Singleton stars as Greens down Maccabi in overtime

In a thrilling Game of the Week containing dramatic swings in momentum, Panathinaikos Superfoods Athens claimed an 83-75 overtime win over Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv at the Olympic Sports Center Athens. The Greens rode a huge performance from Chris Singleton, who scored a career-high 26 points, grabbed 6 rebounds and blocked 2 shots in a dominant display. Singleton received plenty of help from Nick Calathes, who led the offense with 13 points and 6 assists, while James Gist combined 12 points with 8 rebounds. Sonny Weems led the Maccabi attack with 15 points and Devin Smith had a double-double of 11 points and 12 rebounds. Andrew Goudelock added 14 points and Maik Zirbes 11 for the visitors.

Panathinaikos scored the game’s first 7 points and held on to a steady lead throughout the first three and a half quarters, with Calathes and Singleton always providing an answer every time Maccabi threatened to get close. The home team led by as many as 16 points midway through the third quarter and the game appeared almost over when it was 64-52 with less than six minutes remaining. But Maccabi then launched an astonishing comeback with a 0-15 run to lead by 3 inside the final minute, before Gist’s tip-in with 9 seconds on the clock forced overtime – Panathinaikos’s second consecutive game to go into bonus time. The Greens hit 3 triples early in the extra period to re-establish control and a big block by Singleton helped snuff out any chance of another Maccabi comeback.

PASCUAL, XAVI
Panathinaikos Superfoods Athens
“Thank you to the fans who helped the team. We are very happy with this win, it was a tough game and we played more or less good on defense for 40 minutes, only mistakes in transition defense. On offense sometimes we played good but we need to improve quickly, because next week will be very difficult. It’s important to win games like this because we don’t have many days to practise, so we have to grow and improve within the games and that means we have some discontinuity as a team. Bochiridis helped the team a lot, I’m happy with his work.”
HADAR, RAMI
Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv
“First I want to congratulate my players for fighting and making two comebacks here in a difficult place. We suffered again from a disadvantage in possession, turning over the ball six more times than the opponent and out-rebounded on the offensive boards by seven possessions. So having less shots and shooting below our percentage eventually caused the loss, although I’m happy with some improvement on our defensive game. If you judge both ends of the floor, we played bad on offense but decent on defense. In the last quarter we had chances to win but unfortunately we didn’t make the shots.”

Players

FELDEINE, JAMES
Panathinaikos Superfoods Athens
"It was an up-and-down kind of game. We managed to get back into it, but ended up missing shots we usually make. We spend so much energy getting back; we didn't have any left when it got to overtime. We certainly have a lot to learn. We need to fix mistakes and get better, but this is still only November. I have no doubt we'll get better."
FELDEINE, JAMES
Panathinaikos Superfoods Athens
"It was a great win, we showed heart and passion today. They’re a good team with a lot of good scorers. We were up at halftime but they came back as every good team would, and we just need to learn from this and get better."
IVERSON, COLTON
Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv
“We came up short. We’ve had a tough schedule so far, playing here on the road is not easy and not many visiting teams will win here. We’re definitely going to get better. We’ll keep working hard and improving and our wins will come.”
SEELEY, DENNIS
Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv
"We have to be more assertive and aggressive against Panathinaikos. They have a very strong pick-and-roll game and stopping it is the first key when playing against them. After that come the rotations and everything else. They don’t have one player that you need to stop, it’s about team defense."
