Vives shoots Valencia Basket past ratiopharm Ulm

Valencia Basket rallied from an 18-point deficit to beat ratiopharm Ulm 79-82 on a pair of late Guillem Vives threes on Tuesday in Group C. The result left Valencia as the only undefeated team in the group at 3-0, while Ulm suffered its first loss. Ulm led through the first half and fended off Valencia’s second half runs to lead by 4 midway through the fourth quarter and by 3 with 44 seconds left. However Vives took charge after that to push Valencia to victory. Vives finished with 21 points and 9 assists, while Justin Hamilton posted 19 points and 9 rebounds. Fernando San Emeterio added 12 points and Rafa Martinez scored 10 for the winners, who also outrebounded Ulm 27-41. Augustin Rubit scored 17 points, Carlon Brown had 14, Da’Sean Butler 11 and David Brembly 10 in defeat.

Hamilton got Valencia on the scoreboard, but DeAndre Kane sparked a 7-0 Ulm sport. Back-to-back triples by Rubit and Per Guenther gave the hosts a 13-4 lead. Hamilton scored his third basket before Romain Sato become the second Valencia player to score, but a Butler triple kept Ulm rolling at 18-10. A Brembly three-pointer gave Ulm its first double-digit advantage. Brown made it a 12-point game before Vladimir Lucic free throws narrowed the gap to 25-15 after 10 minutes. Free throws followed by a three-pointer from San Emeterio drew Valencia within 27-20. Rubit’s put back and free throws followed by a layup by Brown prompted a Valencia timeout at 36-23. Salva Arco stepped up with a bank shot and a three-point play in extending the difference to 43-25. Hamilton and Vives managed to revive the visitors. Martinez made it a 12-point game, but a Butler triple gave Ulm a 52-37 advantage at halftime.

Valencia was energized at the start of the second half as Hamilton scored twice in a 0-7 run. Martinez added a triple and Sato hit free throws to close the gap to 54-49. Another 0-7 push capped by a second Martinez triple tied the game at 56-56. Free throws by Butler and Brown and a Philipp Neumann jumper restored a 5-point cushion for Ulm. Brown extended it to 7 before Jon Stefansson free throws made it 67-62 through three quarters. Valencia zoomed ahead to start the fourth quarter with consecutive buckets from San Emeterio, Vives and Stefansson’s steal and go-ahead layup before Vives drilled a three to make it 67-71. Baskets by Rubit and Kane tied the score and Rubit put the hosts back ahead. Brown’s three-pointer made it 77-73 midway through the fourth quarter. After a three-minute scoreless stretch for Valencia, San Emeterio’s three-pointer made it a 1-point game. After missed opportunities on both ends, Brown scored a key basket with 44 seconds to go. However Vives tied it up on the ensuing play and after Neumann missed for the hosts, Vives won it with another three at the buzzer.

Head Coaches

LEIBENATH, THORSTEN
ratiopharm Ulm
“When it comes down to the last shot and your opponent scores a three-point shot with one foot, you know you are playing against a Spanish team. Some call it luck, I call it Spanish basketball. Yes, I’m very disappointed because I feel like we really deserved this win. We played with great passion, a lot of energy and also in terms of pure basketball we played a great game. We are suffering a lot of injuries – Raymar Morgan hurt his upper leg during warmup, Per Guenther was injured during the second quarter – so I have to give a lot of credit to the rest of the team, that fought bravely. It would have been fair to win this game.”
MARTINEZ, PEDRO
Valencia Basket
“We were surprised by Ulm in the first half. Ulm played much better than us, they had a much better three point percentage, played with more energy. Our defense was not good enough to stop Ulm and offensively, we had also a lot of problems. In the second half we managed to play stronger in defense and had a better ball movement. The three point shots that we made in the second half were very important.”

Players

NEUMANN, PHILIPP
ratiopharm Ulm
“The loss is very tough, but it would have been even tougher if we didn’t accomplish our goal to play with much more energy than in the last games in Germany. We did that and that is a win for us as a team. Even though we lost, I think we can grow from that game.”
SAN EMETERIO, FERNANDO
Valencia Basket
“We knew it`s would be a tough game, because Ulm is a very good and aggressive team, which already won two games in the competition. After they outhustled us in the first half, we came back stronger and more focused. We stepped up in defense and fought back. To know that we are capable of overcoming situations like gives us confidence.”
