Lacey, Broekhoff keep Loko undefeated

In a rematch of the 2012-13 EuroCup final, Lokomotiv Kuban Krasnodar remained undefeated in Group C by downing RETAbet Bilbao Basket 102-86 at Basket-Hall on Wednesday. Lokomotiv improved to 4-0, while RETAbet dropped to 1-3. Trevor Lacey led the winners with 20 points and 7 assists. Ryan Broekhoff added 16 points, Joe Ragland and Brian Qvale each had 12 and Frank Elegar posted 10 points and 9 rebounds for Lokomotiv. Jonathan Tabu led RETAbet with 24 points, Alex Mumbru added 17 and Dejan Todorovic had 11 for the guests. Lokomotiv shook off a slow start, as Mardy Collins and Broekhoff led the hosts to a 26-24 lead after 10 minutes. Elegar took over early in the second quarter and an unstoppable Qvale pushed the hosts to a 55-40 halftime advantage. Lokomotiv boosted its margin to 60-40 right after the break and kept a safe lead until the final buzzer.

A three-point play by Pere Tomas and a baseline jumper by Todorovic helped RETAbet take an early 2-7 lead. Collins and Broekhoff combined for 9 points in a 13-2 run that gave Lokomotiv a 15-9 edge. Mickell Gladness and Shane Hammink stepped up for RETAbet and an outstanding Tabu kept the visitors within 20-19. Lacey and Broekhoff each struck from downtown, but a wild up-and-under layup by Mumbru brought RETAbet as close as 26-24 after 10 minutes. Broekhoff kept pacing Lokomotiv early in the second quarter. Ragland joined the three-point shootout and a couple of dunks by Elegar made it a double-digit game, 36-26. Mumbru followed a close basket with a triple and Ricardo Fischer buried one from beyond the arc, but Lokomotiv found a new go-to guy in Qvale, who had 9 points late in the first half. A buzzer-beating close basket by Lacey fixed the halftime score at 55-40.

Three-pointers by Broekhoff and Pavel Antipov made it a 20-point game, 63-43, right after the break. Axel Hervelle and Tabu tried to change things for RETAbet, but the visitors only managed to exchange baskets until back-to-back triples by Mumbru gave his team hope at 75-60. Free throws by Mumbru got RETAbet within 80-66 after 30 minutes. Consecutive three-pointers by Dmitriy Khvostov sealed the outcome, 88-68, with less than seven minutes left.

But offensively we played with a lot of confidence, with a good rhythm all game long. So it’s good to watch this kind of a game.
