Benite, Baron lead UCAM to big home win

UCAM Murcia sent a message that echoed all around the competition by downing Unicaja Malaga 83-75 at home in Group C on Wednesday. UCAM now leads Group C with a 3-1 record, while Unicaja dropped to 1-2. Billy Baron led the winners with 22 points. Vitor Benite added 21 and Sadiel Rojas had 14 for Murcia, which was without star point guard Facu Campazzo. Kyle Fogg had 26 points for Unicaja, while Dejan Musli added 17. UCAM dominated under the baskets, pulling down 12 offensive boards and outrebounding Unicaja 32-23. Despite not having Campazzo, UCAM had 16 assists to just 13 turnovers.

Consecutive three-pointers by Dani Diez gave Unicaja an early 5-8 lead. Benite stepped up for UCAM but Fogg scored all the points in a 0-6 run that kept the guests ahead, 9-16. Benite kept pacing UCAM and got help from Marcos Delia and Rojas to tie the game, 20-20, after 10 minutes. Unicaja found a new go-to guy in Musli, who had all the points in a 0-7 run that gave his team a 24-27 lead. Rojas sank a corner triple and a driving layup by Benite put UCAM back ahead, 31-29. Musli stayed on fire, but a three-pointer by Baron restored a 36-33 UCAM lead. Adam Waczynski and Fogg helped Unicaja tie the game again, 40-40, at halftime. An unstoppable Fogg put Unicaja in charge, 42-46, soon after the break. Rojas and Benite fueled a 9-0 UCAM run and Baron struck from downtown for a 54-49 edge. Fogg kept pacing Unicaja, but didn't find much help. Meanwhile, Delia and an unstoppable Benite boosted the hosts' lead to 66-58 after 30 minutes. Hamady Ndiaye and Jamar Smith managed to bring Unicaja a bit closer, 71-66, early in the fourth quarter. Vitor Faverani and Baron stepped up in crunch time, giving UCAM an 80-71 lead with three minutes left. Unicaja only managed to get within 80-75 in the final minute.

"We knew it would be a difficult game, especially without Facu Campazzo, we had to change our usual way of playing. The team was focused, working hard on defense and rebounded better as the game went on. We were down by 1 rebound at halftime against the best rebounding team in the EuroCup and the Spanish League. We did better on defense and rebounding in the second half, stopping their offensive game. We also had better three-point shot selection, first with Benite, then with Rojas and after that, Llompart directed our offense really well and Baron was able to read mismatches. That allowed us to win in the end, even when our big men entered foul trouble too early. We kept playing with intensity, especially in the second half, lowering their three-point shots - they were shooting 50% on the road and lowered that down to 33%. When you win, you take steps forwards to go the next round. Four teams go through and Zenit beat Buducnost, but we have to stay focused and keep playing with this energy."

"I think that UCAM Murcia did a better job than we did and deserved to win tonight. I believe both teams had ups and downs, taking the lead, but they dominated the boards, both defensive and offensive. We were horrible at rebounds and did not get back on defense quick enough, allowing them to get some definitive runs. We have to accept that and improve in the future if we want to compete at this level or higher. UCAM deserved to win, but we were in the game and I have the feeling that in some moments- which already happened in other games - we allowed them to get back in it, especially midway through the first and the second quarters. We played thinking about the scoreboard and that is a mistake - my mistake, in particular. Still, UCAM made the difference due to small details, mainly rebounds, but also intensity and a better attitude at some moments. I have to congratulate UCAM and move on."
