Gdynia remains perfect on the road

Asseco Arka Gdynia celebrated its third win in as many games on the road by beating Dolomiti Energia Trento 80-91 on Wednesday night. The visitors took a double-digit lead in the second quarter on a 0-12 run behind back-to-back triples by Ben Emelogu to reach halftime in control 32-44. The visitors excelled after the break and extended the margin even further in the third quarter, 41-64, supported by great ball circulation and shooting accuracy, and never looked back. Emelogu led Arka with 17 points on 5-of-10 three-point shooting. Leyton Hamilton added 15 points, Devonte Upson posted 14 plus and 7 boards and Bartlomiej Woloszyn added 11 points and 8 assists for the winners. Justin Knox had a monster double-double of 21 points on 10-of-12 shooting and 14 rebounds, followed by Alessandro Gentile with 16 points - all of them in the first half - and George King with 11, while Aaron Craft dished 10 assists in a losing effort

Both teams had slow starts, as neither Trento nor Arka were able to score a single point for the first 2 minutes. Upson and King were the chosen ones to open fire on each side and, from then on, the lead switched from one team to another several times until James Blackmon followed a free throw with a triple to close the first quarter with Trento ahead 19-16. Eurocup debutant Armani Moore opened fire in the second for Arka as a warning that something big was coming for the visiting team. Right after Gentile made it 21-19, Emelogu emerged from long range to hit a trio of three-pointers in a row to boost a 0-12 run that put Arka ahead, 21-31, midway through the second quarter. Gentile tried to rescue his team, posting 10 of Trento’s 11 points in the following minutes, but he found no help against the visitors' controlled and accurate offense. The scoreboard showed 32-44 at halftime.

Things got even worse for Trento when Emelogu rose up again from deep to bury back-to-back threes for a 20-point edge, 34-54, after 21 minutes. Consecutive triples by Toto Forray and Andrea Mezzanote shortened it a little bit, but a three-point play by Hammonds prevented Trento from threatening Arka’s supremacy, 57-71, at the end of the third quarter. The home team didn’t surrender, though, as Blackmon hit from deep right after the break, but Szubarga responded him with another triple followed by a putback slam by Moore for a 60-76 advantage. Even though Trento kept trying, the difference never went lower than 9 points, 76-85, with 2 and a half minutes remaining. Hammonds and Upson combined for 6 points right after that to bury all Trento hope and seal the outcome for Arka.

Road, sweet road

Asseco Arka Gdynia has won all its road games so far. It prevailed 74-78 in Oldenburg against EWE Baskets in the 7DAYS EuroCup season opener, repeated that in Podgorica against Buducnost VOLI 59-62 and have continued the amazing journey in Trento by beating Dolomiti Energia.

Emeloglu, back for good

Ben Emeloglu had to leave the court with an ankle injury after 3 minutes in the first quarter. It wasn't as serious as it seemed, fortunately, and his comeback was like a perfect storm. He nailed 5 triples - 3 of them to allow his team escape in the second quarter (21-31) and 2 more right after the break to extend the lead to 20 points (34-54).

Lone star

Alessandro Gentile tried to play the savior role for his team when Arka broke the game open in the second quarter. Twelve of 13 Trento’s points in that quarter came from his hands, but they were not enough to get his team back to the right path. After halftime, he missed all his shots and did not score again.

Next games

In Round 5 next week, both teams play on Wednesday. Asseco Arka Gdynia will host Galatasaray Doga Sigorta Istanbul (3-1), while Dolomiti Energia Trento visits Malaga, Spain, to play Unicaja (3-1).

"Congratulations to Gdynia. They played a very solid game. They were very good, they were in control of the game. Honestly speaking, today I cannot say anything about my team; we tried out best and for sure we need to improve a lot of things. At this moment, we know we can work on something more, but we will just think about the next game."

"We play like a team, like a family, actually, and most of those guys have never been on a level like this and they really like it. They want to stay on a level like this, so every time we step on the court we play with a chip on our shoulders and that's how it is. I’m very happy that we shot the ball very well, we had 24 assists and we also stuck to the game plan very well. We still had some problems because Armani Moore hasn’t been with us for a long time, but we are looking to help him, to adjust, and I’m happy that today we played like a family on court."

"It’s a beautiful game when we’re knocking down shots because we’re always gonna play defense. That's a main key of ours. It was a great night tonight. We just come in and play game by game. We like the road atmosphere. We like the away crowd. It gives us an extra boost. A lot of people may sleep on us. They don't think we can be this good."
