Panionios Athens jumped to the top of Group H with a narrow 68-69 road win at Spartak St. Petersburg. Uros Duvnjak scored the go-ahead three in the final minute and Marc Carter iced the game from the line in the closing seconds. Panionios improved to 2-0 while handing Spartak its first loss. Carter led the winners with 23 points, Landon Milbourne added 17 and Erick McCollom 16 for the winners. Jared Homan paced Spartak with 16 points and 10 rebounds, Alexey Surovtsev added 12 points and Artem Yakovenko and Steve Burtt Jr. scored 11 each.

Mario Batis fed Guy-Marc Michel for a slam on the game’s first play before Donnie McGrath heated up and put the hosts in front. McGrath fed Yaroslav Korolev that made it 10-6 before back-to-back threes by Milbourne and McCollom sparked a 0-10 Panionios run. Milbourne’s second triple gave him 10 first-quarter points and the visitors a 13-22 lead after 10 minutes. The duo of Surovtsev and Yakovenko rallied Spartak early in the second quarter. A Karolev triple tied the game at 27-27, but 6 straight points from Carter put Panionios back in front. A Yakovenko steal and slam kept the hosts close, 33-35, at halftime. McCollom and Carter kept Panionios up early in the second half, 36-44. Spartak awoke with 6 straight points and jumped ahead 47-46 on Homan free throws. The lead changed hands twice before a 6-0 spurt led my McGrath gave Spartak a 54-48 lead at the end of the third quarter. Panionios turned up the defensive intensity to keep the hosts scoreless for four minutes, during which steals by Carter and Milbourne led to easy baskets and a Milbourne three capped a 0-9 charge for a 57-60 Panionios lead. However the visiting attack went cold after that, too. Homan made it 61-60 with four minutes to play. Duvnjak hit a clutch three with just under a minute remaining to make it 63-65. The McCollum doubled the lead with 19 seconds left. Burtt scored with 5 seconds left, but a pair of Carter free throws with 2 seconds left iced the win and Burtt’s last-second triple was only enough to narrow the final difference

Head Coaches

VETRA, GUNDARS
Spartak Saint Petersburg
"It’s already the second game that we had to win and we lost. Coaches try to understand this and certainly our players worry. We made some small mistakes in defense and in offense, but all of them in the end became the cause of the loss. We had to win. We have a situation that we have a series of away games and it’s not easy, but we live in this situation. We started the game well, but then we made our game worse ourselves. May be I made some wrong decisions in those moments, but we could have evened the score and we had to win in the end, but we couldn’t."
SFAIROPOULOS, IOANNIS
Panionios Athens
"It’s a big victory for our club because we played against a very big club. Spartak is a great club. We controlled the game in the beginning and in the end. We played solid in defense and we took 22 points in the first quarter and 21 points in the last quarter. I think our defense was the key to our victory. I congratulate my players."

Players

KOROLEV, YAROSLAV
Spartak Saint Petersburg
"We had a 6-point advantage near the end of the game, but we made 3 turnovers in a row and we had to even the score; it was a difficult situation for us. We had to make open shoots in the end and we couldn't."
