Strong first half leads Skyliners to third win
Fraport Skyliners Frankfurt registered its third win in Group D by downing Mornar Bar 98-75 at home on Wednesday. Skyliners joins Unicaja Malaga and UNICS Kazan with a 3-1 record and a share of first place in the group, while Mornar Bar dropped to 1-3. Brady Heslip paced the winners with 18 points, Jonas Wohlfarth-Boetterman added 16, Jason Clark had 13, Quantez Robertson and Trae Bell-Haynes netted 11 each and Richard Freudenberg contributed 10 for Skyliners. Nemanja Vranes led Mornar with 15 points, Uros Lukovic added 14, Antabia Waller 12 and Khadeen Carrington and Vukota Pavic scored 10 apiece for the visitors.
A three-pointer by Vranes gave Mornar its only lead, 2-3. Wohlfarth-Boetterman and Robertson fueled a 7-0 run that put Skyliners ahead for good, 9-3. The hosts found a go-to guy in Heslip, who struck four times from downtown. Robertson and Akeem Vargas joined the three-point shootout to boost Skyliners's lead to 36-19 at the end of the first quarter. Carrington and Waller stepped up for Mornar with back-to-back triples, but Heslip and Freudenberg answered from beyond the arc for a 44-27 advantage. Back-to-back layups by Freudenberg broke the game open at 51-31. Skyliners kept hitting outside shots and a dunk by Wohlfarth-Boetterman made it 59-33 en route to a 63-39 halftimme cushion. Nothing changed in the second half, as Wohlfarth-Boetterman kept dominating down low and three-pointers by Clark and Erik Murphy boosted the hosts' lead to 78-50. Mornar kept trying in the fourth quarter, but only got to trade baskets once the outcome was year.
Pivotal performer
In a game in which three-point shots flew all over the place, Jonas Wohlfarth-Boetterman dominated inside, balancing the hosts' offense. 'Wobo' finished the game with 16 points on 8-of-9 two-point shooting – mostly dunks, plus 6 rebounds and 3 blocks for a PIR of 19.
Game-changing moment
Skyliners played a near-perfect first quarter - 5-of-7 two-point shots, 8-of-10 three-pointers, 7 assists and just 1 turnover to get a 36-19 lead.
Best scoring night
Skyliners failed to reach the 100-point mark for the first time in EuroCup history, but came close. Its previous record was almost 15 years old from when it scored 93 points in a win against Demon Astronauts on December 16, 2003.
Stellar stat
Skyliners had 63 first-half points, tying the second-best mark in 7DAYS EuroCup history. Only one team – Zadar with 66 points against Siauliai on January 12, 2010 – had more points before halftime than the Skyliners did tonight.
