Vaerlose edges Mega in a thriller

Vaerlose BBK opened its ADIDAS NEXT GENERATION TOURNAMENT with an 81-83 victory over Mega Leks Belgrade in Group A play in Belgrade. August Haas collected 30 points, eight rebounds, eight assists and three steals for Vaerlose and Jacob Larsen added 23 points, seven rebounds and three blocks as the Danish club improved to 1-0 in the group. Asbjorn Midtgaard chipped in seven points and 12 rebounds in the win. Vukadin Milicevic scored 26 points while Luka Vulikic had 16 points and Mladen Grusanovic added 15 points for Mega, which dropped to 0-1.

Vulikic scored four points as Mega jumped ahead 6-1. Novak Music’s three-ball increased the lead to 11-3 and Milecevic scored to give the Belgrade team a 17-7 advantage. Haas and Henrik Pedersen both nailed threes to get Vaerlose to within 17-13. The score was 18-15 after one quarter. Vaerlose opened the second quarter with the first point and a Larsen dunk knotted the game at 23-23. Mega Leks pushed the lead back to 27-23 but Haas and Pedersen scored as the Danish side took its first lead 27-29. The score was within two points the rest of the first half, which ended with the game tied 35-35.

Larsen’s free throw had Vaerlose up 35-38 early in the third quarter before Grusanovic’s three-ball gave Mega its first lead of the second half 42-40. Larsen and Haas led an 0-7 Vaerlose run to go ahead 42-47. And the lead was 46-51 on a Martin Poulsen dunk. Mega followed that with an 11-0 run as Milicevic scored five points and Vaerlose went scoreless for 2:38 minutes for a 57-51 lead. Midtgaard’s three-point play stopped the scoreless drought and Mega Leks was up 58-56 after three quarters. Grusanovic opened the fourth quarter with a basket and Vulikic nailed a three-pointer and had two free throws as Mega built a 67-61 advantage. It was still 72-68 on a Milicevic three-pointer and another Milicevic trey had Mega up 76-75. But Haas converted a three-point play and Asbjorn Nerlov nailed a three-pointer to give Vaerlose a 76-81 lead. After an Aleksa Cabrilo three-ball, Poulsen and Nerlov both split two free throws to make it 81-83. Mega Leks missed three three-pointers in the closing seconds to secure Vaerlose the victory.
