Ulm prevails in back-and-forth thriller for first win
ratiopham Ulm picked up its first victory this season in the 7DAYS EuroCup with an exciting back-and-forth 103-89 win at home over Maccabi Rishon LeZion. Zoran Dragic scored a career-high 33 points for Ulm, which improved to 1-4 in Group A. Derek Willis tallied 19 points, 16 rebounds and 5 assists, Killian Hayes added 15 points and 9 assists and Grant Jerrett scored 14 points with 8 rebounds. Jordan Swing paced Rishon with 20 points while Alex Hamilton tallied 18 points, 6 assists, 4 steals and 2 blocks, Frederic Bourdillon had 17 points and Oz Blayzer added 15 points in the loss, which dropped the Israeli side to 1-4.
Ulm tallied the first 8 points and Dragic already had 8 points in helping the hosts jump ahead 16-5. Ulm’s offense went dormant and a Bourdillon three-pointer and Hamilton three-point play started a 0-14 run to put Rishon up 16-19. Dragic added 7 more points and Ulm was up 25-22 before Adam Ariel’s three-pointer evened it 27-27 after 10 minutes. A Blayzer three-point play pushed Rishon ahead 29-32 early in the second frame but Willis came up with 6 points and Dragic 5 points in a 17-5 surge to move ahead 46-37. Hamilton responded with 5 points and Rishon trailed 55-47 at the break.
Ulm came out of the locker room with 4 turnovers in the first four minutes, while Hamilton’s three-point play started a 0-12 run for a 55-59 Rishon lead. Hayes’s dunk opened the scoring for Ulm at the 5:48 minute mark and the teenager and Dragic combined for 14 points before Andreas Obst’s four-point play finished off an 18-4 run to put Ulm ahead 73-63. The gap was 75-68 after 30 minutes. Seth Hinrichs came off the Ulm bench for 5 points to keep Rishon at an arm’s length 80-75. Willis nailed 3 three-pointers in the span of 2:31 minutes to push Ulm ahead 91-80 with 4 minutes left. Dragic added a triple of his own and scored another basket as the gap was 96-83. Rishon would not get closer than 11 points in the final 2 minutes.
History made
Zoran Dragic tallied 33 points which marked a personal record in European action. His previous EuroCup best was 17 points and he had tallied 24 points three times in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague - twice for Unicaja Malaga in the 2013-14 season and the last time in the 2017-18 season with Anadolu Efes Istanbul against Crvena Zvezda mts Belgrade.

While Dragic had his offense rolling, Killian Hayes did a great job getting everyone involved in collecting 15 points, 6 rebounds, 9 assists and 3 steals.
Telling numbers
Ulm grabbed 42 rebounds compared to 25 for Rishon. Ulm shot 60.5 percent from two-point range while also holding the guests to 25.9% on three-pointers.
Next games
Ulm will look to make it two in a row when it visits Segafredo Virtus Bologna on Round 6 next week. Rishon remains on the road and will face Promitheas Patras in search of victory number two.
