Jovic, Miller help Crvena Zvezda beat Bayern to snap skid

Crvena Zvezda Telekom Belgrade hit all 9 of its three-pointers in the second half in pulling a away to a resounding 79-90 road win over FC Bayern Munich on Thursday night. Stefan Jovic set a new Euroleague record with 19 assists and Quincy Miller scored 22 points to lead Zvezda. The result left the two teams with 2-3 records in Group A. Each of the four quarters had at least one lead change. Bayern took control with a 12-1 second quarter run, and led 48-40 early in the third, but Miller and Vladimir Stimac led Zvezda’s rally in the third quarter. In the fourth, Nikola Rebic and Marko Simonovic got hot from downtown, each sinking 3 triples, and with their career-nights helped Zvezda pull away and register a victory that puts it right back into the Top 16 race. Stimac netted 18 points, Maik Zirbes scored 10 of his 14 in the first quarter, Simonovic netted a career-best 15, while Rebic had career-high 11 for Zvezda. Dusko Savanovic scored 19 points for the hosts, John Bryant had 12, and Alex Renfroe 11 in defeat.

First quarter: Bayern rallies from an early deficit

Miller opened the scoring inside for Zvezda, and Deon Thompson answered for Bayern. Zirbes scored twice in the lane to give Zvezda a 2-7 lead. Savanovic opened his account with a three-pointer, but Miller drove and dished for a Zirbes dunk, and after Ryan Thompson scored in traffic, Stefan Jovic dishes an assist to Zirbes for another slam and a 5-13 advantage midway through the first quarter. Bryant cut the deficit with a three-pointer, but Thompson hit a baseline jumper and Lazic scored a fastbreak layup, making it 8-17. However, Savanovic sparked an 11-0 Bayern run from close range, before K.C. Rivers hit a transition three. The run continued as Anton Gavel dished a pair of assists, first to Bryant and then Djedovic on a back-cut for layup, 17-17. The hosts capped the run, and took the lead, with Bryant banking in a turnaround jumper in the final minute before Zirbes got his personal tally into double digits, making it 19-19 after 10 minutes.

Second quarter: Hosts take control with a big run

Stimac scored inside on three consecutive possessions to open the quarter, giving Zvezda 19-25 lead. But Gavel got a lucky roll on a three-pointer, and after Gavel and Stimac traded baskets, Savanovic made a baseline floater and then knocked down a triple to tie the game at 29-29. Bryce Taylor drove for a dunk, and after a Zvezda timeout, Renfroe buried a wide-open three for a 5-point cushion. Renfroe also elevated for a dunk, helping the hosts lead 38-30, before Miller made a put-back to snap a 12-1 run. Taylor made a runner, but Jovic answered with a fastbreak layup. Miller scored in a crowd, and after free throws from Renfroe, Stimac scored from close range to make it 43-38 at halftime.

Third quarter: Miller and Stimac keep Zvezda in it

Miller hit a long jumper to get the third quarter going. Nihad Djedovic hit a triple and Taylor fed Thompson for an easy dunk and a 48-40 lead, but Stimac banked it in on the other end before Miller hit Zvezda's first three of the night. Thompson scored a tip-in for the hosts, before Simonovic and Savanovic traded triples. Simonovic added a tip-in to the visitors' tally, cutting it to 53-50. After a Bayern timeout, Nikola Rebic nailed a corner triple, then immediately made a steal and raced for a fastbreak layup-plus-foul and a 53-55 edge. Gavel snapped a 0-8 run with free throws, and after a step-back jumper by Miller, Bayern went back in front with Bryant scoring from close range and Rivers knocking one down from long range. Bryant banked in a turnaround jumper to make it 62-57. After a Zvezda timeout, Miller hit back-to back triples, but Renfroe made a tip-in just before the buzzer, to give Bayern a 66-63 edge.

Fourth quarter: Barrage of threes lifts Zvezda to victory

Zirbes scored a fastbreak layup, his first points since the first quarter, and Rebic hit another corner triple to give Zvezda a 66-68 lead. Savanovic made a runner on the other end, and Taylor followed it with a triple with no time on the shot clock, 71-68. But Zirbes scored inside, and Simonovic made a steal and raced on the fastbreak to make it 71-72. After Savanovic nailed a long jumper, Miller had a put-back dunk and Jovic fed Stimac, who scored a basket-plus-foul, 73-77. Savanovic cut into the deficit, but Simonovic hit from way downtown. After free throws from Taylor, Jovic dished his 17th assist to Rebic for a corner triple, 77-83 with less than two minutes to go. After a successful defense, Zvezda opened a 9-point margin with another triple from Simonovic and record-breaking 18th assist by Jovic. Djedovic made a driving layup, but Jovic found Simonovic again who buried a tough jumper to seal the deal.

"Congratulations to Crvena Zvezda. They played an excellent game from the first minute until the end of the game. They played excellent defense and created advantages in transition and pick-and-roll. I don’t know how we won the first half of the game. They played an excellent game, very smart, good defense. We should congratulate them. They were better than our team and our game. Crvena Zvezda didn’t have anything to lose. Just like us at Real Madrid. From minute to minute they got more confidence in their game. Our players were surprised. I don’t know where I’m playing. They are playing in our house and are playing with confidence. They developed their game minute by minute. I don’t know if we can underestimate any team in Euroleague. "

"Congratulations to my players for a great game and the victory. And a great thanks to the fans who came from all over Europe to make for an fantastic atmosphere in the arena. We came here to Munich with three losses in a row - all of them were very bad. We had a lot of problems and lost Guy Mekel to a sprained ankle last night and Branko Lazic got hurt during the game. We have to say because of all of these problems, that this victory is heroic, very brave. We started the game very well. We had a good defense. The early lead gave us self-esteem. We knew that Bayern would pressure us. We had some mistakes, that is part of the inexperienced players who were on the court tonight. After the Lazic injury it seemed to me that we were not going to keep up the rhythm with Bayern. But we played the second half very well and at a high level. In the end, we played our best basketball and we shot really well and hit some very important shots. We came here and made a heroic victory. Nobody could have had a feeling after these three games that we would look like we did tonight."

"It was tough. This was an important game because we’re competing with Zvezda and Strasbourg for that top four position in our group. They came ready and had a great Serbian representation. It was like they had a home game. We just had too many defensive breakdowns. We just have to play better. We’re on a three-game losing streak now. We will watch video, but we have to play better on the defensive end."
MILLER, QUINCY
Crvena Zvezda Telekom Belgrade
"We just needed to be come together and be consistent with our play. We’re pretty excited. We played pretty good defense. That’s really what it was. We’ve been playing bad, but we can turn it around. It’s okay, we can come back. It helps us get closer to a spot in the Top 16 in Euroleague. We’re excited and we just want to keep playing well and capitalize on this moment."
