Offense carries CSKA past Bayern in Munich

CSKA Moscow hit 13 three-pointers and controlled all four quarters en route to a 79-93 road win over FC Bayern Munich at the Audi Dome on Friday. CSKA, which pulled away to a double-digit lead in the first quarter and never looked back, remained unbeaten at 7-0 to keep sharing first place with Real Madrid, while Bayern dropped to 3-4. Cory Higgins paced six CSKA double-digit scorers with 18 points, while Sergio Rodriguez had 12 points and 8 assists in victory. Nihad Dedovic and Derrick Williams scored 14 points each for Bayern.

Dedovic and Vladimir Lucic sparked Bayern's offense early on, opening an 11-7 lead, but it took no time for Rodriguez and CSKA to take control. Back-to-back threes from Alec Peters and Rodriguez put the visitors in front, before Higgins fueled a 0-9 run that made it 16-26 after 7 minutes. Lucic and Williams helped the hosts get within 23-30 after 10 minutes, but Nikita Kurbanov, Nando De Colo and Andrey Vorontsevich each hit three-pointers for a 25-41 CSKA advantage. CSKA allowed just a one field goal in the first 6 minutes of the second quarter, however, Bayern went to the foul line often. The hosts moved within 32-43, but Kurbanov and Rodriguez hit consecutive triples before a massive fastbreak dunk from Will Clyburn extended the difference to 36-54. After CSKA went to halftime ahead by 40-56, Bayern got into an offensive rhythm early in the third quarter with Williams scoring 5 points. Back-to-back threes from Lucic and Dedovic got the hosts closer, at 56-64, but Rodriguez answered with a triple, before Clyburn put up 6 straight points to make it 59-75. The hosts closed to 65-77 after three quarters and Devin Booker soon had a pair of dunks on Petteri Koponen's assists to get Bayern within 10 points. But Othello Hunter had an easy layup to make it 72-85 midway through the fourth quarter, and if there was any hope for the hosts, Peters hit a transition three to seal the deal.

Efficient start

CSKA had a dream start to the game. In the first 7 minutes, CSKA scored on 11 of its first 12 trips down the floor, pulling away to a 16-26 lead. Alec Peters and Cory Higgins each scored 7 points, while Sergio Rodriguez and Othello Hunter had 6 apiece as CSKA shot 5-of-6 two-pointers and 4-of-6 triples, and somehow managed to pull down 2 offensive rebounds after those 3 missed field goals.

Movers and shakers

Alec Peters had 13 points in 3-of-4 three-point shooting, and pulled down 6 rebounds for CSKA, while Will Clyburn had an all-round performance with 10 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists. Othello Hunter collected 10 points plus 7 rebounds, and Nikita Kurbanov also scored 10 in victory. Derrick Williams and Nihad Dedovic scored 14 apiece, and Vladimir Lucic added 12 points for Bayern. Petteri Koponen netted 10 points and Danilo Barthel pulled down 11 rebounds in defeat.

Hidden stat

Only a week after hitting 18 three-pointers on 26 attempts against Darussafaka Tekfen Istanbul, Bayern shot just 3-for-17 from long range in this game against CSKA.

Did you notice?

Vorontsevich is the longest-tenured player on CSKA's roster, and by making his 241st appearance in this game he broke the record for the most EuroLeague games played in a CSKA uniform.

Next game

Bayern will stay at home in Round 8 to welcome Olympiacos Piraeus on Tuesday to break their part of a tie for eighth place. A day later, unbeaten CSKA will hosts its long-time rival Zalgiris Kaunas (3-4).

RADONJIC, DEJAN

"Congratulation to CSKA for the win. I cannot be satisfied with the first half defensively. We played soft in the first half. When you play against CSKA, you have to be ready to play a different way. They used those situations, and had an excellent percentage of three-pointers, and they had a big advantage after 20 minutes. We played better in the second half, we allowed 37 points in the second half. But it was not good enough to make it a close game tonight. CSKA is a great team, in excellent shape, they play really good. The fans supported us the entire game even though CSKA had the advantage, and that was great."
ITOUDIS, DIMITRIS
CSKA Moscow
"I want to congratulate my team. We were a better team and controlled the game from beginning to the end. We saw two different halves. Except the opening two minutes, in the first half we were very good and everything looked easy. We shared the ball well, followed the plan on the defensive end. We forced turnovers and hit shots. In the second half we expected that Bayern would react because of the character they have as a team. We played a solid game, and managed to bring another win. Obviously, it is middle of November and we still didn’t meet our potential. We have to be more consistent in what we are doing. In the EuroLeague, nothing is given. Remember that Bayern set records in scoring and three-pointers just days ago. They are playing very good on that end. We were hurt a little bit on the boards and in the inside game, and we did not solve that well. That’s a good point for us to work on in the upcoming games. It was great atmosphere, and it was great to play in this legendary arena."

DANGUBIC, NEMANJA
FC Bayern Munich
"CSKA is really a great team. It was very tough to come back after the first quarter. We had some good runs, we improved our defense in the second half, but it wasn’t enough for the win. We have to learn from our mistakes in the first half."
HIGGINS, CORY
CSKA Moscow
"We are clicking as a team, and that's the most important thing. But I think we could have been a lot of better, especially on the defensive end tonight in the second half. We also got kind of complacent and sloppy on offense, too. But it is good to get another win and continue to build on this."
RODRIGUEZ, SERGIO
CSKA Moscow
"We are happy for the win. It is still November and we know there is a long way ahead. We are working well every day in practice, working on different things to get better. Today, they were giving up many threes, and we took advantage of that. We played well offensively, especially in the first half, but also in the second."
