Karsiyaka leaves Latvia with road win
Pinar Karsiyaka Izmir left Latvia with a 72-81 victory over Ventspils to raise its record to 2-1 to join PAOK Thessaloniki in second place in Group F. The hosts dropped to 1-2. Karsiyaka used an 11-0 second-quarter run to take the first big lead, 20-34. The visitors stretched it to 20 points in the third on a Jon Diebler triple and controlled the game in the final 10 minutes. Juan Palacios amassed 18 points and 10 rebounds, Kenny Gabriel added 18 points on 6-of-7 two-point shooting and 8 rebounds, and Bobby Dixon also scored 18 points to lead the winners, while Jon Diebler posted 16. Ventspils got 13 points with 5 assist from Mire Chatman, 11 from Ate Artis, while Andreis Grazulis bagged 10 with a perfect shooting performance.
Palacios’s 6 points put the visitors ahead 3-8, but veteran point guard Chatman from long distance put Ventspils in front 10-8. Palacios converted a three-point play with seconds left in the quarter to give his team an 18-23 lead. Zanis Peiners opened the scoring in the second quarter for the home team. Gabriel soon capped a 0-11 for a 20-34 advantage. A jumper by Dixon and a triple from Gabriel sent Karsiyaka to a 24-41 cushion. Chatman, again from downtown, kept the hosts in charge. Palacios and Ate exchanged baskets to make it 34-47 for the guests at halftime.
Ventpsils made an attempt at a comeback by closing within 38-47 through Harvey Grant from the foul line, but Gabriel finished a break with a huge dunk to rebuild a 14-point cushion. Diebler hit from beyond the arc to make it a 20-point game, 42-62, with three minutes left in the quarter. Andrejs Grazulis with a three-point-play and Martins Mejers with free throws tried to keep the hosts alive, but Soner Senturk went to the rim to make it 50-69 through three quarters. Ten consecutive points from the home team led by a brilliant Gardulis put them back in the game at 60-69. Palacios, assisted by Yunus Sonsirma, scored to restore a double-digit margin, 65-77, with two minutes left. Dixon free throws sealed the visitors’s victory.
