Shved shines, leads Khimki to big road win

Two-time EuroCup champion Khimki Moscow Region grabbed its third win in Group B by downing RETAbet Bilbao Basket 72-91 at La Casilla on Wednesday. Khimki moved up to 3-1 in Group B, while Bilbao dropped to 1-3. Alexey Shved led the winners with 23 points, Jacob Pullen and Sergey Monya each added 14 and Nobel Boungou-Colo scored 11 for Khimki. Alex Mumbru led Bilbao with 20 points, Ivan Buva added 14 and Scott Bamforth 12 for the hosts. Khimki dished 19 assists, collected 10 steals, made 12 three-pointers and shot at much-better percentages (58.3% 2FG, 44.4% 3FG) than its opponent.

Buva got Bilbao going with a three-point play and a tip-in, but Shved struck twice from downtown in a 0-8 run that gave Khimki its first lead, 5-8. Shved kept pacing the guests and got help from Marko Todorovic to boost Khimki's margin to 11-16. Danilo Nikolic and Dejan Todorovic struck from downtown, but Shved and Boungou-Colo helped Khimki keep a 19-25 lead after 10 minutes. Markel Brown and Pullen took over early in the second quarter to make it a double-digit game, 21-35, which is when Dmitry Sokolov and Michael Eric were disqualified. Mumbru and Axel Hervelle tried to change things for the hosts, but back-to-back baskets by Stanislav Ilnitskiy and a couple of triples by Shved kept Khimki way ahead, 34-51, at halftime. Monya fueled a 0-9 run that E.J. Rowland capped with free throws to make it a 22-point game. Mumbru buried consecutive three-pointers, but he didn't find much help around. Meanwhile, Monya, Pullen and Egor Vialtsev set a 52-74 Khimki lead after 30 minutes. Nothing changed in the fourth quarter, as Khimki kept a safe margin and sealed the outcome long before the final buzzer.
