Olympiacos defeats Barcelona on historic evening

It was a historic night at the Peace and Friendship Stadium, where local heroes Olympiacos Piraeus defeated FC Barcelona Lassa 59-52. Vassilis Spanoulis scored 15 points and dished 6 assists – including the 1,000th assist of his storied EuroLeague career – to lead the Reds. The Olympiacos’ defensive effort held Barcelona to a record-low in scoring in the competition. The result set both teams’ record at 4-3. Erick Green added 9 points off the bench and Khem Birch collected 7 rebounds for the winners, who forced Barcelona into 17 turnovers. Jonathan Holmes led Barcelona with 13 points and 9 rebounds and Tyrese Rice added 11 points, but struggled with his shooting and missed all 5 of his three-point attempts.

The visitors turned to Ante Tomic early, but he lasted less than five minutes before taking a seat with his second foul. Spanoulis was sharp in pushing the Reds to an 11-9 edge. Spanoulis followed his 1,000thcareer assist with a pull-up three pointer for a 19-12 advantage. Holmes amassed 10 first-quarter points to keep Barcelona close. The scoreboard showed 21-16 after 10 minutes. Green came off the bench to make an impact for the Reds, though Joey Dorsey kept the visitors close, 32-25, at halftime. Spanoulis drained a three to start the second half, which put the Reds up by double figures. Rice finally got on the scoreboard for Barcelona. He sent an alley-oop assist to Dorsey for a slam, then darted inside for a layup and then sank 2 free throws to trim the deficit to 39-34 midway through the quarter. Threes by Daniel Hackett and Green kept the Reds in charge. Ioannis Papapetrou put-back and three-pointer gave Olympiacos a 49-38 cushion through three quarters. Barcelona struggled with its shooting, but managed to claw within 56-51 in the penultimate minute, however Birch scored inside as the hosts were able to preserve the victory.

"Very important win for us because after two defeats we needed to react and I am very happy that we played an excellent defensive game tonight. All the players were very focused to play good defense and I believe that’s the key, our good defense, of this win. Tonight we had our best defensive game in this season so far and we put the base for the victory in the second half when we disorganize the offensive movement of Barcelona and we kept Rice without points in the first half. Also we forced them in the first half to make 12 turnovers and as you can see the numbers this time shows what happened. We kept Barcelona at 35% two-pointers and 27% from three and in general they have an average of 76 points and we kept them minus-24. We controlled the game. We had a secure lead and I believe that we deserved the win. "

"It was a very strange game. I think both teams didn’t play well. For us it is obvious that if we wanted to win this game, we should have played better. Our [shooting] percentage was very low; we turned the ball over 18 times; we missed, I remember, something like 10 layups under the basket without any pressure. I cannot find how we could win this game. Olympiacos always played with desire on defense; they try to destroy your offensive game. I think the result was fair. We don’t have five players and it’s not just for this game, but for many games in a row. So our level, our quality, is a little down right now and we have very difficult games in a row. "

"You see the score and you understand that we played great defense. On offense we had some good open shots and we didn’t score. We will make the shots. The most important is to play good defense and to try to find the best the best solutions on offense. "
