Motum leads Zalgiris past Galatasaray

Zalgiris Kaunas registered its second win of the season by downing visiting Galatasaray Odeabank Istanbul 87-75 on Wednesday night in Zalgirio Arena. The win snapped Zalgiris’s four-game losing streak, and improved the team’s record to 2-5, while Galatasaray remains alone at the bottom of the standings at 1-6. Zalgiris took control behind Kevin Pangos and Brock Motum, using a 14-2 second quarter run to take the lead for good. After holding a 47-35 halftime lead, the hosts continued dominating early in the third quarter and extended the margin to 20 points. Galatasaray tried to rally late, but never threatened. Motum finished the game with 24 points, Leo Westermann had 16 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists, while Pangos had 9 points and a career-high 8 assists. For the visitors, Sinan Guler scored 11 of his 15 points in the first half, Blake Schilb netted 12 points, while Emir Preldzic and Justin Dentmon finished with 11 apiece.

Early on, Pangos scored 7 points and Sinan Guler had 6, as both were facilitators for their respective squads. The teams went basket for basket, with neither team building margin larger than 3 points. Guler made a layup to make it 20-20 after 10 minutes, and his triple gave Galatasaray a 25-28 edge in the second stanza. However, it was all Zalgiris after that. Arturas Milaknis hit a pair of threes, and Pangos dished in transition for Motum’s corner three-pointer. Westermann also added a pair of basket, including a floater that capped a 14-2 run for a 39-30 lead. Pangos beat the halftime buzzer after driving three-quarter length of the court to make it 49-37, and Motum had a triple and a put-back early in fourth to extend the margin to 56-39. Galatasaray was not finding its rhythm on offense, and a long baseline jumper from Renaldas Seibutis broke the 20-point barrier with two minutes left in the third quarter. A triple from the right corner by each Jon Diebler and Preldzic at the start of the fourth, followed by a fastbreak dunk from Preldzic, cut the deficit to 70-59. Back-to-back triples from Schilb made it 75-67 midway through the fourth. But the visitors never got closer than that, as Zalgiris got enough defensive stops down the stretch, and fine assists from Westermann and big baskets from Motum to avoid drama at the end of the game.

"For us it was a very important game, a must-win situation. I am very happy we won. For most part of the game, we showed very solid and very smart basketball, which is very important to me. I think we were more aggressive and that we played for most part a really good game. Galatasaray is a talented offensive team, and I think we stopped a little bit against switch defense, which is very surprising to me because we were aggressive until then. But most importantly, we got the win we really, really needed. The team is progressing, playing good, but there are no wins. So it has been very difficult. I think now guys can relax, and hopefully they can play even better. We also played excellent in Barcelona. I don’t have problem how guys are working. We need to continue to grow, we need to continue to pay attention to small details that in the end turn into big things. Most important thing about Brock [Motum] is he was always giving maximum even when he struggled last year. He is one of the guys you feel happy for to see results, finding himself in the offense. Let’s hope he continues like this."

"I think the first quarter, and second half was a tied game. But we did not fight in the second quarter. We allowed 29 points in that period, and that 12-point difference in the second quarter was the final difference at the end. "

"I thought we just played really hard, and that is most important thing for us. We were making shots, and playing smart. We did not make as many unforced mistakes. I think we got a little bit tentative in the fourth quarter. We did not want to make mistakes with the lead like that and that is when you relax too much and end up making mistakes. Something to learn from, but I think we played a good game. "

"We came close last few weeks, and I am happy we finally got to pull one out. I am just working, trying to get better each game. Hopefully we can get some more wins. We just need to keep building each week. If we can finish the game like we finished tonight, we will be okay. [Personally] I am more experienced and more comfortable playing now than last year."
SCHILB, BLAKE
Galatasaray Odeabank Istanbul
"Zalgiris played its style of basketball. We were on our heels in the first half, and we dug ourselves too big of a hole trying fight back. It is disappointing, because last week we played good basketball, and this week was totally different. It is back to the drawing board for us. We have to show more toughness, character in this kind of game. We should win. We have the veterans, and this team we faced had a bunch of young guys. But they came out and played free. We looked like we were the young guys, and they were the veterans. It is hard to keep losing like this, but still a lot of games left. I think we have another game in two days, so we have to fight back and respond."
