David Hawkins - Galatasaray Medical Park - EC12 (photo sport.trefl.com)Galatasaray Medical Park easily beat PBC Lokomotiv Kuban 76-52 at home in Group E, but Kuban remained in first place in the group. Both teams are 3-1 in the group but Galatasaray’s 24-point win could not overtake Kuban’s 25-point victory between these teams last week in Russia. Kuban’s Nick Calathes blocked David Hawkins’ shot with two seconds left and Hawkins was off-target on his rebound attempt at the buzzer. Hawkins led Galatasaray with 14 points while Jamont Gordon had 12 points and Cenk Akyol, Boniface Ndong, Milan Macvan and Erwin Dudley all tallied 10 points. Calathes paced Kuban with 19 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists and Andrey Zubkov had 10 points in the loss.

Macvan scored six points as Galatasaray jumped ahead 11-0. Kuban did not score until Jimmy Baron’s four-point play with 4:45 left in the first quarter to make it 11-4. Macvan added two free throws and Akyol drained a long ball as the host team extended the advantage to 19-4. Zubkov hit a triple for the guests’ second basket and then nailed a long ball at the buzzer for bring Lokomotiv to within 21-12 after 10 minutes. Galatasaray continued its domination in the second quarter as Henry Domercant hit a triple and Hawkins pushed the advantage to 28-14. Calathes was one of the few effective players for Kuban, cutting the deficit to 31-20. The hosts did not let up and Ndong’s dunk just before the half left Galatasaray with a 42-25 cushion at the break.

Hawkins opened the second half with four straight points to increase the lead to 21 points. Calathes finally got Kuban on the board in the second half after more than three minutes of action with a three to make it 46-28. And Baron’s score trimmed the margin to 50-34. But Gordon nailed a triple and Akyol’s score pushed the advantage back to 21 points, 57-36. Hawkins finished what he started with a triple at the buzzer for a 62-40 cushion after three quarters. Engin Atsur’s triple increased the lead to 69-42 but Simas Jasaitis and Calathes knocked down three-balls to cut the deficit to 71-50. Ndong’s dunk with 17 seconds remaining gave Galatasaray a 76-52 lead – which would have been enough for first place. But Calathes scored with seven seconds left and then blocked Hawkins’ shot with two seconds to play and Hawkins missed the rebound attempt at the buzzer.

Head Coaches

ATAMAN, ERGIN
Galatasaray Medical Park
"This was the greatest basketball game that we have played this season so far. The atmosphere was great and my team was eagerly anticipating this game after the loss last week. Our defense was at its highest level and we played a smart offence. We did not let their shooters, Jasaitis and Baron, get wide open shots and we also stopped Calathes and Maric very well. We are happy we won this game, however we tried our best to get the 26-point margin. To get the victory is more important. I would like to thank my players, they showed how well we can play in equal basketball conditions."
PASHUTIN, EVGENY
Lokomotiv Kuban Krasnodar
"Congratulations to Galatasaray Medical Park, they played great basketball. Even if we lost tonight, we are happy we did not lose the point margin advantage. We could not play the way we wanted. Our opponent put in more effort than us. The remaining games are very important, our goal as a team is the highest spot we can reach. We got some lessons from this game and we will try to be better than this."

Players

DUDLEY, ERWIN
Galatasaray Medical Park
" It was a difficult game for us. Last week, we played a game in difficult conditions and lost by a very big margin. We knew we are a better team and today we played very good basketball. I would like to thank our fans for supporting us. "
CALATHES, NICK
Lokomotiv Kuban Krasnodar
"We had a very bad start tonight and the deficit increased very quickly. Galatasaray played a perfect basketball and on the other hand, we were so different from last week. The injuries definitely affected us, but that is not an excuse. We could have played better, but we are happy we did not lose the advantage to finish the group on the top."
