With defense as its calling card, CSKA registered its third consecutive Euroleague win in Group C when it felled previously undefeated Real Madrid 64-52 at home in Moscow, Russia on Wednesday. CSKA's record improved to 3-2, while Madrid dropped to 4-1, alone in second place pending other group results. David Vanterpool led the winners with 15 points, hitting 7 of his 10 two-point shots. David Andersen added 13 points on 5-for-8 shooting while Trajan Langdon had 11 for CSKA. Igor Rakocevic was the only player to score in double figures for Madrid, with 13 points. It was all defense, all night as both teams combined for the seventh-lowest scoring total ever in a Euroleague regular season game, with 116 points. CSKA overcame an early deficit with an 18-0 run that counted for a 29-27 edge at halftime. A small lineup allowed CSKA to boost its margin to 45-35 after 30 minutes, while Andersen and Vanterpool sealed the outcome late in the fourth quarter.

Felipe Reyes got Madrid going with a driving layup that Holden quickly erased with free throws, as both teams started the game with tough man-to-man defense. CSKA used Sergei Panov and David Andersen, who was nursing a calf injury, in the both frontcourt. Madrid got to the offensive boards, but its shot selection was poor in the early going. Andersen nailed a four-meter jumper to give CSKA its first lead, 4-2, but when Axel Hervelle answered from downtown and added free throws, then Bullock put in a cosat-to-coast layup, Madrid was suddenly ahead 4-10 and the hosts needed a timeout. Bullock capped a 0-10 run with a baseline jumper for a 4-12 margin after 7 minutes. CSKA finally improved its ball circulation with Theo Papaloukas on court, as Langdon nailed a big triple and Smodis made 3 free throws to cut the difference to 10-12. David Vanterpool tied the game with a running jumper and Papaloukas slashed to the rim to cap a 10-0 run that gave CSKA a 14-12 edge after 10 minutes.

To start the second quarter, CSKA found a go-to guy in Aleksey Savrasenko, who dropped a jump hook and a layup to make it 18-12. CSKA's defense was the difference now, as Madrid had not scored for more than 5 minutes, while a red hot Savrasenko and Vanterpool pushed the run to 18-0 and the lead to 22-12, forcing a Madrid timeout. Bullock finally found a basket for the guests with a long two-pointer but Sergei Panov came off the bench and immediately nailed a triple for a 25-14 CSKA lead. Venson Hamilton beat the shot clock buzzer with a tough layup for Madrid and Igor Rakocevic nailed a three-pointer from the top as the guests got within 25-19. Rakocevic kept going with a basket-plus-free throw to which Edu Hernandez-Sonseca added free throws, making it 27-24. Holden stopped CSKA's slide with a corner jumper, but a turnover gave Gelabale the chance to dunked and add a free throw to fix a 29-27 score at halftime.

Madrid struggled to score early in the third quarter, while Panov got CSKA going again with a put-back layup and a three-pointer, good for a 34-27 lead. Gelabale stepped up for Madrid with a six-meter jumper, but Langdon answered from downtown to keep CSKA in charge. Reyes slammed a two-handed dunk but Andersen followed a three-point play with a turnaround jumper for a 42-33 CSKA margin. Panov went to the bench with 4 fouls midway through this period and Madrid called timeout to adjust its offense. Once Andersen picked up his fourth foul, CSKA used a small lineup with Vanterpool as power forward. Holden made his trademark jumper off the dribble and Vanterpool added a free throw, but Rakocevic slashed to fix the score at 45-35 after 30 minutes. CSKA held Madrid to 8 points in the third quarter.

Gelabale tried to get Madrid going with a turnaround jumper while CSKA went scoreless for more than 2 minutes early in the final quarter. Madrid did not do much better, however, committing several turnovers. Langdon fired up the crowd with his third triple while Rakocevic stepped up for Madrid with a short jumper. Andersen returned to the floor to score under the basket and add free throws on the next play. When Vanterpool scored off a steal, CSKA had its biggest lead yet, 54-41, with 4 minutes to go. Rakocevic gave Madrid some air with a big three-pointer and Bullock copied him from downtown to make it 54-47. The threat ended when Langdon hit a high-flying jumper and Andersen a wild two-handed dunk, sparking an 8-0 run which Vanterpool capped with consecutive baskets. The outcome was sealed, as CSKA handed Real Madrid its first Euroleague loss of the season.
