In a high-scoring, fun-to-watch showdown, Telekom Baskets Bonn registered its first win in Group D by rallying to beat CAI Zaragoza 108-104 at home on Wednesday. Both teams now tie in Group D, each with a 1-2 record. Benas Veikalas paced the winners with 19 points. Ryan Brooks had 17, Jamel McLean added 16 on 10-of-11 free throws, Jared Jordan got 14 while Enosch Wolf and Donatas Zavackas each contributed 10 for Bonn. Damjan Rudez and Viktor Sanikidze led Zaragoza with 16 points apiece. Giorgi Shermadini added 15, Michael Roll had 13, Joe Jones got 12 while Pedro Llompart dished 9 assists for the guests. Zaragoza led 25-19 after 10 minutes and managed to get a double-digit lead, 44-54, at halftime. A 66-point third quarter did not change things, as Jones gave the guests an 81-93 margin with 8 minutes remaining. Zaragoza still led 89-99 with 3 minutes to go but three-pointers by Veikalas, Florian Koch and Jordan allowed Bonn to get its first lead, 103-101, with 41 seconds to go. McLean sealed the win from the foul line.
Sanikidze shined early in the game, hitting a couple of three-pointers and scoring down low to give Zaragoza a 4-10 lead. Jordan followed a triple with a layup but Shermadini and Jon Stefansson kept the guests ahead, 12-17. Shermadini and Stefansson kept pacing Zaragoza but three-pointers by Steve Wachalski and Koch tied it at 22-22. A layup by Pere Tomas and a triple by Roll but Zaragoza back ahead, 25-29, after 10 minutes. Kock tied the game, 30-30, but a 0-6 run which Roll capped with a jumper gave the guests a 30-36 lead. Rudez and Shermadini fueled another 0-7 run for a 35-44 Zaragoza margin. Veikalas and Zavackas struck from downtown but Rudez, Jones and Llompart made it a double-digit game, 44-54, at halftime. McLean led an 8-0 run that brought Bonn a bit closer, 52-57, after the break. Sanikidze followed a triple with a jumper. He got help from Tomas and Llompart for a 56-67 Zaragoza lead. Veikalas stepped up and singlehandedly kept Bonn within 63-69. Three-pointers by Roll, Jonathan Tabu and Rudez allowed Zaragoza to stay ahead, 79-85, at the end of a high-scoring third quarter. Jones followed a layup-plus-foul with a triple for a 81-93 Zaragoza lead. Jordan tried to change things for Bonn but Rudez allowed Zaragoza to get a 89-99 edge with 3 minutes left. Three-pointers by Veikalas and Koch brought Bonn back to life, 97-99. Shermadini stepped up with a basket but back-to-back triples by Koch and Jordan completed the hosts' comeback, 103-101, with 41 seconds left. Free throws by McLean sealed the outcome down the stretch.
