Virtus Siena edged Stellazzurra Basketball Academy Rome 57-58 on a pair of game-winning free throws from Fabio Cuccarese at the Torneo Citta di Roma. Both teams now have 1-1 records. The final standings in Group A will be decided by Saturday’s games. Luca Severini starred for Siena with 20 points and 12 rebounds, Pierfrancesco Oliva tallied 13 points and 12 rebounds and Cuccarese finished with 12 points. Federico Mussini scored 20 and Davide Moretti 10 for Rome. Mussini scored 5 quick points to help Roma grab an 11-6 lead. Severini scored 6 straight points to lift Siena to an 11-14 edge at the end of the first quarter. Mussini helped Rome regain control at 19-18. However Cuccarese connected from behind the arc as Siena took the lead and held on for a 22-25 halftime advantage. Rome got within 2 before Oliva scored half the points in a 0-10 run that put Siena in control 29-43. An Andrea La Torre basket at the end of the third quarter started a run that continued as Rome reeled off 12 unanswered points to start the fourth quarter and tie the game at 43-43. Mussini and Moretti each scored 5 in the run. The game was tied twice more before Rome took its first lead of the second half on a Todor Radonjic three-pointer with just under a minute left that made it 56-54. Severini tied the score on the next play. An Andrea Carosi free throw gave Roma a 1-point edge with 13 seconds remaining. Paolo Manganelli missed a go-ahead three for Siena, but Cuccarese was first to the rebound, drew a foul and sank 2 free throws to win it, 57-58.
